Just been told my cat is overweight

Two year old british blue.. Just been told he is very overweight for his age. I'm obviously going to do something about it but to me he looks normal?! I always thought brits were a bit more 'chunky' than other cats?

Not really sure how to get him to lose weight because he only has two pouches per day as it is, He always refused more than that. He also only gets one 'treat' per week, generally one of those encour tuna fillets.

Any tips for getting him to normal weight please?

Awww he is gorgeous. Could someone else be feeding him or is he an indoor cat?
I don't have any advice - we have a very, very 🫣 chunky kitty. We give him less than the recommended feeding amount and he's still massive.

He looks normal to me.

We’ve had normal weight cats and a couple of total puddings. Pudding 1 ate anything in sight and caught extra, so dieting never worked.
Pudding 2 ended up getting 4-5 small meals a day, it was a bit of a hassle but did manage the weight issues. Pudding 2 (much like pudding 1) would eat any left over human food and eat the dogs food so careful management was required.

Some breeds are always going to be heavier than the standard weight chart. I think he looks fine and that is not a lot of food. I wouldn't worry too much tbh.

omg my British blue male looks way ummm chunkier! Your cat looks adorable!

He's gorgeous and looks fine to me although if he goes out it's likely he's being a six dinner Sid and you're on a hiding to nothing in getting him to lose weight.

We were told one of ours was overweight although she was the same weight as her brother. Turns out they were looking at some sort of weight trajectory and that she had put on weight faster than he had, when I highlighted that she was starving and just bones when they first started to weigh her they amended it. Not saying it is the case for your cat but as with humans these are not exact. Can you play with him a bit more?

That's a cute photo, but it's impossible to tell much about his weight from that view.

How much does he weigh, and how much did the vet say he needs to lose?

LunaandLily · 28/06/2024 22:19

He’s gorgeous!!

spikeandbuffy · 28/06/2024 22:33

Lurking
Mine is 6.8kg and the vet says they would prefer him about 6.5kg

He looks quick slim for a BSH. I have two and they are both chonkier.

fieldsofbutterflies · 28/06/2024 23:20

You can't really tell anything from that photo - have you got one where he's standing up?

Our big boy weighed in at 8.7kg last year - he's now down to 7 with very, very strict rationing. The vet wants him to lose another half a kilo or more.

His brothers are about 5kg (aged 4) and 2.5kg (one). They all get the same amount of wet food per day but the big lump gets very rationed biscuits 😂

RogueFemale · 28/06/2024 23:23

Can't tell how chonky he is from the photo. Need to see more of the torso and tummy! (he's gorgeous of course!) Does he have a wobbly tummy that swings when he trots?

EasterlyDirection · 29/06/2024 00:02

We've got one plump and one very slim, it is hard to stop the plump one swiping the slim one's food. In our case they have both been a steady weight all their lives (11yo) but one has always been plumper and over the last year has got definite middle-aged spread - the vet printed out their weight charts. We have switched to a food she doesn't guzzle quite so greedily, supervise their wet food feeding and hope for the best with dry food. Also No Snacks. DH was always slipping her bits of meat and fish. The weight is gradually coming off again - I weigh them fortnightly by stepping onto the bathroom scales holding them and then subtracting my own weight.
