Tail Amputation

Dd's cat has been injured and is having their tail amputated today.

It was an almost total degloving. 😪

Does anyone have any experience of this? The vet has advised that she may have to become an indoor cat which is going to be difficult for them.

Poor dd was crying into a tea towel this morning when she was telling me.

I have a very outdoor cat that we turned into an indoor cat because he is a thug

Apart from having to be obsessive about making sure windows have covers, and having an airlock in the kitchen so he doesn't get out the back door, he has adapted surprisingly well.

He moans at us for about 10 minutes twice a day, and has got a bit fat, but otherwise he's fine.

Although he did leap out of an upstairs window yesterday as the cleaner thought 'he's too fat to jump out of a small space'

A friend had this with her Bengal, years ago. Her stumpy boy is getting on now, but has still gone out with no issues once healed.

When I was a kid we had a cat who got run over and had to have her tail amputated. It honestly did not hamper her at all, she still went outdoors, and she lived until she was about 23.

VeryQuaintIrene · 25/06/2024 11:28

Once he's fully recovered from the injury, he should be fine. He can just identify as a Manx in future!

fieldsofbutterflies · 25/06/2024 11:33

I'm not sure why he'd need to stay indoors? Tails can impact their balance a bit but my experience is that they adapt perfectly well!

Yes my old cat got clattered by a car and tail amputated. He was fine
Unlike my bank account.

One reason to keep him in would be to stop further accidents!

My parents never stopped going on about the childhood cat which got run over and needed a pin and plate.

Cat was barely back from the vets when it went straight out again and got run over.

I was bereft, my parents were just weeping over the vet bill.

My cat severed her tail and had an amputation over 10 years ago. Manages fine without a tail and she goes outside. Good luck and happy healing 🤞

Keiki · 25/06/2024 13:22

The same happened to one of mine. Healing wasn't straight forward but once healed cat has been fine. Can still jump on curtain rails and balance fine, goes out and rules the neighbourhood. Good luck!

Toddlerteaplease · 25/06/2024 13:30

My friends cat lost his tail. It makes no difference to him at all.

Not all cats cope with life indoors, especially if they’re used to going out. The other thing is keeping them when they’re not used to it!

I had a cat who needed a partial tail amputation after being hit by a car and breaking it and fracturing her hip. She spent 2-3 weeks in a crate after surgery then house arrest up to 6 weeks post op.

Turned out she couldn't move the remaining half of her tail and got the tip caught and ripped open. A fly laid eggs in the wound which we found out after the maggots exploded all over DS bed. 🤮

She ended up having most of the rest of the tail removed (half inch stub left) and recovered very well from that. She was out and about pretty quickly after her op and lived another 5 years as a mainly outdoor cat.

Kayemm · 25/06/2024 23:08

Here she is. 😢

They had to remove more than they thought so are worried that it may affect her back legs and maybe her bladder.

Thanks for your kind words

Oh poor thing how is she getting on?

SammyScrounge · 26/06/2024 02:31

When my cat was young he had to have his tail amputated. Obviously he stayed indoors until it was healed but after that he.got on with his usual life climbing trees and stalking birds. He was over 20 when he died.

Many years ago my parents had a stray cat who started coming into their garden. Her tail was clearly injured but they couldn't get near her, and eventually it fell off. Don't know how she didn't become badly infected. At some point after that they started to gain her trust, she started coming into house and eventually became our pet - they were really pleased as she started putting on weight quite quickly - turned out to be pregnant with four kittens which we kept.

She was certainly an outdoor cat - we had a massive garden with trees to climb, on top of which we lived next to a derelict railway with a hill the other side. She'd often be seen in the railway cutting and I can remember she went missing for a few days and I saw her on top of the hill from my bedroom window - she was 99% white so it was clearly her and not her kittens. She came back safely by the way.
