Is my cat too thin?

tingalinggg · 24/06/2024 21:34

She's female and 2
I have 2 cats
1 male and 1 female
She is a nervous cat
She will be eating and any noise she hides
Then he will try and steal her food
I stand over and watch but if she doesn't eat it and walks away ,he will eat it
She seems okay in herself
Is she too thin ?

She looks fine to me. Lovely coat too. She’s very pretty.

PrincessCordelia · 24/06/2024 23:09

She looks ok to me but we have the same problem so one gets extra dreamies while the other eats his fill then we feed the other one when the first one is too full!

we also free feed biscuits so they can eat those whenever they like

EnglishBluebell · 24/06/2024 23:32

That picture doesn't show her side profile so it's very hard to tell

fieldsofbutterflies · 25/06/2024 06:16

She looks okay but it's hard to tell from the photo due to the angle and her colouring.

Have you tried using microchip feeders for their food?

tingalinggg · 25/06/2024 07:38

Not sure if this is any better
I'm not sure if it's because she's lost some of her winter coat

She's a very small cat
Compared to my male cat she's so dinky

I would say she's perfect according to the many vet charts online but it does depend on how thick her coat it and her actual weight for size. What was her weight last time you took her to the vet? There's a good chart on this link.

Obesity in cats

Vets estimate that over a third of cats in the UK are overweight - our vets have given their advice on keeping your cat in shape.

My youngish (6 year old cats) are pretty slender and Sybil is positively skinny under the fur. They are actually cat shaped. Like with people, we are so used to seeing fat pets that they have become normalised.
OP - your cat looks in perfect shape to me (and gorgeous too 😁), but if in any doubt, ask at your next vet visit.

fieldsofbutterflies · 25/06/2024 08:06

She looks healthy and her coat is shiny so I wouldn't worry too much. We had a cat who stayed the size of a six month old kitten her whole life - some are just tiny!

bananaphon · 25/06/2024 08:07

Looks fine to me. My older cat has always been slight. Lots of fat cats around so it's easy to think a normal sized cat is skinny

ObsidianTree · 25/06/2024 08:15

I have this problem too. Greedy boy and grazing girl. It's a pain but when she's stopped eating I take her bowl away until she's ready to eat it. Then kick the boy out so she can eat in peace. After her second go if some left I'll let the boy have it as she won't eat it when it's old!

soupfiend · 25/06/2024 08:17

Well what does she weigh and how much can you feel her spine and ribs. You cant tell from a photo. You should be able to feel spine and ribs but obviously with a bit of a covering.

Edited

This. I actually asked my vet if my cat was underweight or if other cats were fat. He said its the other cats.

BobbyBiscuits · 25/06/2024 18:24

She looks lovely! I have 2 where one is podgy and greedy and other skinny. The fatter one is much more proactive about food and I always take the thin ones bowl away as soon as he leaves. Or the fat one will take it all. Plus they have different foods as well due to allergies.
Sometimes I will feed the thin one in a separate room with door shut after fatty has eaten his own plate.

Cerialkiller · 25/06/2024 18:28

Is she quite young? Our cats podged up when they got to middle age and the females were pretty slender up until that point.

tingalinggg · 25/06/2024 19:29

@Cerialkiller she's just turned two so still quite young

@BobbyBiscuits same my male cat is so greedy,he jumps at our plates the works

BobbyBiscuits · 25/06/2024 19:35

@tingalinggg Try feeding in different rooms at different times. They don't like competing or eating near eachother anyway I think in general.
She is absolutely gorgeous though. My slim one is 5 and from the top looks a little skinnier than that, but he's perfectly healthy. Just has a small build and less interest in food. 🐱

tingalinggg · 25/06/2024 20:03

Thanks for all your advice everyone

Just here for the cat photos! My female cat was very small-framed. Unlike my current male who is more Cartman from South Park.

beckybarefoot · 25/06/2024 20:05

i have a very skinny 10 year old... she's always been slim, i've spoken to the vet about it loads of times, and they assure me that she's fine and they are happy with her muscle etc.. she's a hunter! which they say is the reason

TruthThatsHardAsSteel · 25/06/2024 20:10

Our boy grazes and the old lady will happily trough all his food down when she's finished hers, so we lift his up and keep it covered for later. He's pretty good at letting us know he wants a bit more and we do it so the old lady doesn't know (else there would be angry old lady cat war).

SatinHeart · 25/06/2024 20:15

Our vet said that with cats, at a healthy weight you should be able to feel their ribs but not see them.

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 25/06/2024 21:20

petwell.co.uk/products/surefeed-microchip-pet-feeder petwell.co.uk/products/surefeed-microchip-pet-feeder]]]] £96 microchip feeders here. I know it’s a lot but you wouldn’t have to stand over them if she had one.

tabulahrasa · 25/06/2024 21:28

How does she feel?

I’ve a dinky cat, she looks thin compared to some cats, but when I feel her spine, hips and ribcage under her fur she’s pretty well padded.

she’s just a petite cat.
