Cat crime scene - cleaning fairies

Our cat Dusty is a typical huntress. She leaves half eaten rodent carcasses on the mat of our back porch, which is fairly enclosed. I usually get rid of these but lately I've been too tired and left them til morning.

Low & behold, come morning the evidence is gone. She has usually been asleep on our bed all night so we know she hasn't gone back for seconds.

Last night she kindly vomited on the mat. Again this morning, all traces were gone.

Who are these cleaning fairies?

Our garden is not huge and a cat or fox would have to jump at least 6ft to get over the fence. Would they even want this kind of delicacy?

I reckon fox. I’ve seen them jump out 6 foot fence many many times

It must be mustn't it. Not fussy eaters are they!

I agree, I've seen a fox get over a 6 ft fence. It could be a cat, but a fox would be more motivated.

My cat does go back to the scene of the crime himself, I've seen him revisiting an (outdoor) rabbit carcass. He always finishes off a rodent in one go!

Slugs? They are surprisingly voracious!

Crows? They tend to pick up the bodies we throw onto the drive pretty quickly.

Crows, magpies or owls

GateauxBlaster · 30/06/2024 19:59

I've seen a magpie take a half dead but still living mouse away - totally shocked the cat who had let the mouse go and turned and walked off so that he could turn around and go OMG there's a mouse!! Which he tried but there was no mouse as the bird had taken it and flown off, which he'd not seen or heard. Spent ages looking for it.
