10 month old cat won't stop biting

Alan is 10 months old and full of mischief! Looking for tips on getting him to stop play biting all the time. Even if you just go up and smooth him he immediately attacks your hand and starts play biting!

Tips gratefully received!
Thanks 😊

You need another cat...

How much do you play with him?

And does he go outside or is he an indoor cat?

He has two sister cats Nancy and Jess who have just turned 2. They are indoor cats but have a catio they spend most of the day in.

We have a gazillion toys which he plays with and we play with them with him. He runs around like a loony with the girls but they end up getting fed up of him attacking them.

I love my boy but he has to stop biting!

You need to squeak and squeal quite loudly when he does it, its how cats signal to each other that the play fighting has gone too far

I'll give that a go. Thanks!

Ooh that's a brilliant idea! Thank you! My 9 week old boy keeps getting a bit rough with his twin sister, she does squeak and squeal at him, but coming from me, he may think about it differently! I'll give that a go too!

My girl is 3 now and has never stopped play biting and has her claws out Sad

GoodVibesHere · 22/06/2024 11:53

Oh god just to clarify, I meant she keeps her claws outstretched when she play fights. I haven't had her claws taken out (which would be a horrific thing to do!!).

Basil is 13 - he's still a bitey bastard, particularly in the morning when waiting for breakfast, but we forgive him because he's very cute. 🤣

I'm afraid to say we have an eight year old old who still gets rather feisty - he swiped at DH today because he had the audacity to go past him at feeding time and not feed him 😂

I knew he would be ginger before I saw the pic. Gorgeous boy! When he bites you he is initiating play. Try to get into the routine of play with him to take all of that kitten energy out of him before he boils over and decides to chomp. Play with him at the same times every day, preferably before his meals.

Don't use your hands as a toy. Use only toys to play with him and when you approach him with your hand, don't do it immediately after playing. Approach slowly and from the side not directly in front of him as that incites their hunting instinct. Any overstimulating will.

This. Cats need to learn that hands are for stroking and toys are playing, ideally from the first time humans start interacting with them.
