Dcat is nearly 17. She has hyperthyroidism, a raised heart rate and a slightly diminished kidney function but is otherwise pretty healthy and enjoying life and the vet is happy with her.

She has had some urine infections recently but is currently fine.

Until about the last year, she has generally toileted outside in the corner of our garden. Doesn't leave the garden. Another cat moved in and she is scared of it so we've had to have indoor facilities since. She doesn't go outside at all for the toilet but will come out and sit if anyone else is out.

She wees a lot, no issues, the vet says she is just regulating her kidneys well. She mostly does it in one of two trays but sometimes overpees, I've tried trays with enclosures and she doesn't like so will pee on the floor instead.

I've currently been using clumping litter as it seems better smell wise and she is happy with it but.... essentially the clumping feature is a waste of time as I end up needing to completely empty the whole tray daily. I've started using puppy pads to line the tray as otherwise it can take kettles full of water to try to clean the compacted litter. She still manages to track it all over the house, her paws are caked in it and the biggest issue is that we only get our bins collected every 4 weeks and by that point the bin is so heavy that I struggle to get it put out and it's not fair on the bin men either. I also cant bag up days worth of sopping litter to take to the dump in my car.

Any clever solutions or litter type suggestions that might be less heavy and easier to manage?

Thanks again all, that is definitely a beautiful looking relative and those crystals are on the try list along with many of the suggestions above. I'll hopefully find something that works better.

I'd be putting in a lot more litter not less. At least 3 inches deep, it will stop it sticking to the sides, you should just be able to scoop it out as a ball. I change it completely about every 10 days, you might be able to go a bit longer, I find it smells a bit at that point though. I probably use 24l a month.

Ultimately though the main issue is that your bin is only emptied every 4 weeks.

Thanks, I don't think it will make a difference how much litter I put in as all the litter I am disposing off is wet regardless, the extra puppy pads wont really be adding to that weight.

And I agree it's ridiculous re 4 weekly bins but that's just the way it is here now and they aren't going to increase it. We get one week grey (general waste) and blue (recycling plastics/tins), next week green (cardboard and paper) then it's brown (garden and food waste which we pay an extra £50 a year for) and a glass pick up and then 1 week with nothing. Volume wise it's tight because I have the litter waste but otherwise it's doable and I can pay for an extra cardboard or recycling bin but no options for an extra general waste (bigger bin) unless you are a household of 6 or over or have a medical requirement.

Just thought i'd do an update on progress. I bought a bag of the silica crystal stuff. It seems that people were saying that you can get up to 4 weeks use as it absorbs a lot and doesn't smell.

So, set it up last Sunday afternoon. She's taken to it well. I used it in her No1 choice tray and left the other with the clumping stuff. 2nd tray has a few wees in it but not a lot. Good points are that it's definitely tracking less over the house, most of the stray crystals outside the tray are on the puppy pad/the washable rug under that. Her paws are not caked either. However, i started with using 3 quarters of the bag. All solids removed as they are done and I've stirred it up a few times a day. I ended up adding in the rest over a couple of days as it seemed pretty wet. I trusted the process though. It was definitely absorbing though the bottom was getting saturated.

Anyway we get to today and it's soaked in as much as it can, tray very wet and cat pee-ed on the puppy pad instead.

Emptied and cleaned and bag is very heavy. I was hoping at least a week if not the 4 that seems normal.

Anyway, I've had to back to old method until i can get back to the shops. I don't think there is an answer, she just wees too much for normal systems to apply.`

I found the wood pellets work well as it tends to clump and the excess moisture evaporates so you can scoop out dry lumps. Oh and I surrounded the tray with puppy pads! She ended up hanging off the edge.

Pashazade · 28/06/2024 14:30

Well obviously not completely dry but there is no excess liquid floating around.

How about propping up the litter tray at a very slight angle. That way all the wee goes down to one end, without making a big puddle through the whole thing? And put the puppy pad at that end?
