Cat eating grass

My cat is eating (what I think) is a lot of grass. He will cry to go out because he wants to eat grass. I know this is the reason because I can go out and bring grass in and he is quiet. He was at the vets a month or so ago for having on and off diarrhea. Do you think I should take him back?

Just to add, he is eating the grass. He's not bringing it back up so I don't think it's fur

Hes short-haired. And I've never seen him bring a hairball up. I didnt know if it could be related to his stomach issues

I thought they generally vomited grass back up because they can't digest it? My cats eat grass, they do it nearly every day. I don't think they are ill.

Mine is always sick after eating grass! I don't believe there's any hairballs, she is a shorthair.

So I would expect that eating grass causes stomach upsets, but it might just be that a long stalk of grass gets stuck on the way down causing her to be sick.

If he still has diarrhoea , I would take him back to the vet.

My cat goes out for a graze nearly every day. He doesn't have many teeth so I have to keep a section of lawn long for him.

No vomit. He chews the end of the grass. His diarrhea has stopped but he is sometimes ending up with a dirty bum and I have to clean him. When I scoop litter poo looks fine.

Cats sometimes eat grass to increase their vitamin intake so may be a result of being unwell. They also eat grass to make up for the fact that most cat food doesn't contain the bones, feathers etc. they would eat in the wild and grass provides fibre as well as vitamins. Some cats just like it!

Two of mine eat grass and go out just to do it - neither of them are unwell 🤷‍♀️

FattypuffToThinnifer · 20/06/2024 11:56

Mine eat grass and one particularly likes it wet so I assume he may be thirsty (he does have multiple water bowls out but prefers the pond in next-door’s garden for some reason…)

Shorthaired cats can get furballs! Both of mine do on occasion.

Cats do tend to eat grass when they need to make themselves sick, so if yours isn't sicking it back up, and it's unusual behaviour, I would consider soaking to the vet.

Both of our cats love to have a little munch on the grass when let outside. They don't eat a lot of it, but would eat a little every day and are not sick from it.
Grass provides fiber and is a natural hairball remedy for them.

Agree it's natural for cats to eat grass (and not always sick it back up) but if he's eating it, not sicking it/furball up and has diarrhoea then he could have a blockage in his digestive system he's trying to clear.

Yes, take him back to vets.
