Tooth extraction after care

My 13yo moggie is having a tooth removed next week. Are there any particular foods that it would be good to get her for the first few days when she’s sore?

And any other tips?

I've been through this with four cats and they recover SO quickly. None of them showed any hesitation chowing down on their normal soft food once the anaesthetic wore off.

If she really likes dry food then you can mix it with warm water so it goes mushy. You could treat her with some cooked chicken (shredded) or boneless fish.

Hope it all goes well!

That’s reassuring @LordSnot . She doesn’t have wet food for her day to day food, loves chicken though.

How long since the surgery? One of my boys had all his out at once, except for two fangs. If it's the first few days after surgery just give him whatever he'll eat to get calories in. He should start to feel much better soon.

If he seems to be in a lot of pain you could call the vet and see if you can increase his dose of painkillers or give them more often?

You can also buy high-calorie pastes that cats can lick, no need to use teeth or gums. They're very appetising so good for cats who aren't eating much for whatever reason.

Wow, rude. People are perfectly able to give advice to two posters on the same thread given the topic is similar.

Our girl needed eight out when she was about four - she was eating pretty much normally the next day, but from memory we did give her boiled (poached?) chicken breast on day one. She was on Metacalm and we also had a spray mouthwash type thing to do every day with her until she went back for the checkup.

@MalewhoisLaffinalltheway could you try poaching/boiling chicken and giving the "broth" in a water dish? Our vet suggested that after a sicky spell because the water apparently absorbs the nutrients from the chicken.

Not intending to be rude @StripedTomatoes but it’s not exactly the same issue, so a separate thread would probably be more helpful.

Chicken afterwards does seem to be the consensus then. I can’t see my Ivy complaining about that 😁

Mine had a load removed, ending up with just one tooth remaining
I lovingly offered a smooth pate, he glared at me and crunched down a raw chicken wing
Never had an issue eating

I did ask for it to be moved and have a different title.

In answer to your initial question, I think flaked tuna works quite well. Buy the stuff in spring water rather than oil or brine. You can get it in Lidl for about 99p a tin. Also their Coshida brand of cat yoghurt, comes in thin sachets just like Licky Lix. Hope she recovers well.

I’m clearly worrying too much, but this will be her first operation since she’s been with me.

Anyway, DH loves an excuse to roast a chicken.

Hello my cat had all his back teeth out due to calicivirus 😔.. I was worried at first but 4 months down line he's fine ...
We fed him pate soft cat food and would soak his biscuits in hot water boiled from the kettle.. and let them cool ..
We still do it now with the biscuits, but not too soft as the vet said he still can crunch with his gums

Gourmet pate is soft with no lumps. It’s worth buying a tin as back up.
