Smell of cat food - any tips? (Gratuitous cat pics attached)

We have recently adopted a lovely 8 year old cat and I'm so delighted to have him - he is really gorgeous. The only issue is that due to the layout of our house, the only sensible place for his food to go is near to the dining table, and I find that the smell of his wet food is quite unpleasant. Does anyone have any tips for reducing the smell please?

Oh he is stunning!!

What sort of wet food are you feeding him? I really find some does smell more than others.

I tend to put wet down for my cats at mealtimes, let them eat then scrape out the wet food bowls may 30 minutes later. They do have biscuits constantly available so they don't starve and an absolute feast of treats.

Oh, he is gorgeous. My cat likes Sheba cat food and that comes in smaller pouch options.

It all gets eaten immediately by my cat, but it does mean you have to feed them more often.
I always leave the dry food and water out, which doesn't smell

Wet food doesn't have a chance to smell in this house as it's eaten in about thirty seconds flat 😂

I wouldn't leave it out longer than half an hour really, just because it attracts bugs and maggots in summer.

Thank you. He doesn't eat it all, and I always think he might come back to it later, so I leave it out, but in practice he never does. Maybe I'll try just clearing it away. Of course he always has biscuits (and seems to be developing a late-night Dreamies habit 😂)

Definitely don't leave it down for long, but you can extend the time and stop the smell with a motion activated or microchip feeder as they seal the smell away.

I feel your pain, because my old resident cat isn't coping with new one, I've got his food in the living room. Urgh the smell first thing in the morning. I much preferred cats that would t eat wet at all!

You definitely need to be clearing it away after half an hour or so - just give smaller portions and close the rest off and put it in the cupboard for the next meal if he doesn't eat huge portions.

Believe me, you don't want some kind of maggot infestation 🤮

No advice just wanted to admire your beautiful floofy cat!😻

Yes, we only give enough wet food for him to eat it all in one ridiculous greedy gallop and the rest of the time it's dry food that he can eat if he's hungry. He's currently on a wet food only diet after a tooth removal and it's frustrating having the wet food lurking so now I've taken to giving him less, then a bit more later if he looks hungry. Obsessively clean bowls between meals.

Thanks all. I have actually switched foods (from Felix which is little chunks in jelly to the Felix which is more solid) and the good news is that he now eats it all in one go, su clearly he likes it! The bad news is that he had a runny poo today 😭 so not sure if the new food agrees with him!

Give it a few days for his system to adjust to the change in diet.
