Cats poorly and I can’t get pills into him

My poor ginger boy has been poorly for a while, he’s 14, went off his food 2 weeks ago, started losing weight then one morning I noticed a lump on his face (abscess), vet conformed it’s an abscess probably from fighting/hunting, they gave him a antibiotic injection and a pain killer and I started giving him anti biopics the next day. Getting them into him has been a nightmare, occasionally I have managed to get him to take it in food and when I can get a extra pair of hands (I live on my own) we have forced them down him. He’s been taking them for 5 days now and the lump has not gone down, this morning he projectile vomited his food and tablet out so he hasn’t had his morning dose, the evening dose is the hardest as he’s just not eating much.

He seemed to be picking up the last few days and eating a little more but now today he’s being sick. We are back at the vets Monday and I’m worried they will want to drain the abscess or/and run more tests to see if anything else is going on. He’s a old boy so I know his time is probably limited.

Any tips on getting tablets into him? Or do I except that the antibiotic probably aren’t working as the abscess has not gone?

Greenies feline pill pockets from amazon (they make dog ones too so check right sort) were game changers for getting my girl to accept tablets

We don't have to do it as regularly but these made it so easy when we have needed to point it was a non event - cat just ate them zero drama.

Glad you got some metacam in him.

My boys were so poorly at Easter and stopped eating and just not picking up. Fortunately an appetite stimulant injection did the job in the end.

It was a very stressful time you have my deepest sympathies.

Those pill poppers are great. A tip I was given by a vet nurse is to put a drop of water in and then the pill. The drop of water helps get the pill down.

Sadly my boy took a turn for the worse yesterday and I took him to the out of hours vet a hour away. When they examined him he kept panting with his tongue out (something he had never done before), they calmed him down and and took blood which came back clear. They were going to send him home but he dropped again and needed oxygen. They decided something serious must be going on so I left him at the vets to have a scan and X-ray. By the time I got home he had got worse, they scanned him and found a large mass on his heart and I had to consent to have him PTS. I couldn’t make him wait until I got there as I was so far away, he was already partly sedated for the scan and so poorly that he wouldn’t have known if I was there or not. I feel guilty that I couldn’t be with him but it was the right decision. It was his time. He was 15 and he had 15 amazing years, despite losing most of his 9 lives in the first 2 years, I am sunrises he made it to such a good age. He will be sadly missed by me and the many people who came over to visit him. He was a special cat in many ways.

So so so sorry.

We lost our very most special boy and it hurts so much. Out of the many cats we have loved and currently have he was "the one".

You did the right thing by him Flowers

Can't think of the actual name. I just call it a peashooter, but you can get them from the Vets and probably places like pets at home. All you do is pop the tablet in. Place it as far into the Cats mouth and shoot the tablet down their throat. It's the only way the Vet could get a tablet into my late DCat and the only way I could get a tablet inside him. Otherwise it would be he'd eat around it. He'd eat it then bugger off and spit it out. Usually someplace un retrievable or he'd bite my fingers trying to shove it into his mouth. The weird thing is when he was much younger he'd snaffle them out of my hand like they were treats 😅

Sorry for your loss.

He was definitely ‘the one’, totally irreplaceable, I don’t I will be having any more cats, he was just so special, my shadow.

Today has been hard, coming home to an empty house will take some getting used too. I used to open the door and he would be sat in the stairs giving me the ‘where the hell have you been’ look 🤣 or he would be waiting outside for me.
