Is there a cheaper way of feeding my cat?

We recently got a new cat and the vet has recommended Applaws. We're ordering online. I was hoping to feed her the biscuits with an occasional pouch to supplement. But she doesn't like the biscuits.

She's obviously a wet food fan but I was hoping there would be a cheaper way (supermarket brands aren't suiting her tummy).

Any suggestions please?

Can you maybe ask the breeder/owner of mum what she was eating before?

I have a rescue cat who will only eat whiskas pouches (not tins!) and a few go cat biscuits. I had tried loads of other, better quality, foods but it’s this or she doesn’t eat! Some cats are very fussy.

DangerQuakeRhinoSnake · 12/06/2024 11:39

Thanks @HeHeHeDidIt my cat is also a rescue and she was eating Felix pouches and Whiskas biscuits before. We carried on but she had a consistent bad tummy so the vet suggested different food.

We used to roast a chicken, or fish fillets for our cat in similar circs. Freeze half so it can be later for the chicken at any rate.

Applaws isn’t a complete food, so she won’t get all the nutrients she needs from them. I have 4 cats and they all love Sheba, Whiskas seems to give quite a few cats upset tummies.

buffyslayer · 12/06/2024 13:52

Sometimes you have to go with it too
I was adamant my new cat would be raw fed or at least good quality wet food

He told me he would eat Sheba only wet food and wanted biscuits Hmm
We have compromised on Sheba wet food, the odd bit of raw mince or chicken and good quality biscuits

Hermittrismegistus · 12/06/2024 13:58

Try Scrumbles kitten and queen dry food along side felix or whichever brand of wet cat food they like. Many cats seem to like scrumbles and it's not full of crap.

Surely not as a permanent solution? That sounds expensive and also quite a lot of hassle.

The applaws pouches aren't but the biscuits are, I was so hoping she would like them!

I'll have a look at Sheba, thank you.

Tined fish (oil or springwater, never brine)
cooked chicken

I used to buy a turkey leg (not sure if Asda or anywhere still do them), roast it, portion it up and put into sandwich bags, keep in the fridge

DangerQuakeRhinoSnake · 12/06/2024 15:54

@RefusingToPlayYourGames this sounds so expensive! You fed them this all the time??

Buy in bulk from Zooplus and sign up for their loyalty scheme.

AlltheFs · 12/06/2024 15:57

We feed scrumbles dry with Whiskas pouches as extra.

All of the cats we have had go mad over tuna brine.

We once had a kitten whose fur was like wire wool. A couple of bowls of tuna brine later and it was like kittens fur ought to be. Could be a coincidence, of course.

buffyslayer · 12/06/2024 16:01

My idiot cat won't touch tuna!

MyMumTracyBeaker · 12/06/2024 16:02

How about Feringa, OP? For wet food I switch between Feringa and Yarrah, my cat eats anything though, and gobbles up any food in front of him!

Completely agree with this.

Ineedaholidayyyy · 12/06/2024 16:04

Have you tried all supermarket brands or just a few? There is a lot of bad press about felix so I'd avoid that anyway, but there are others like Harringtons, or Sheba for example. Mine both love sheba, I know it's not the best quality but they both eat it. You can get a box of 48 for anywhere between £12 and £16.50.

DoAWheelie · 12/06/2024 16:07

I do smilla biscuits, and a single Felix pouch split three ways between them as a small treat once a day. They are all happy and healthy.

I get it from zooplus along with their litter and it works out about £5 per week per cat for food and litter.

ObsidianTree · 12/06/2024 16:08

My cats eat Harrington's which is grain free and not ridiculously expensive. They also sometimes have offers on their website.

Bonus they enjoy it also!

If you feed "real" meat or fish, cats need far less than if it was commercial cat food as it is much denser protein. Alongside biscuits, of course.

CrunchyCarrot · 12/06/2024 18:12

Mine has to be grain free so he has grain free dried food and then usually something I eat so we can share, so grilled chicken breast, tinned tuna, tinned sardine. Tonight it's chicken!

Allergictoironing · 12/06/2024 18:25

I use a decent dry, then Gourmet Pearle for wet. Used to be Felix but that was ruined, then tried a few others and ended up with their favourite. That way they get a good quality dry (lots of options including for sensitive stomachs), and something they love at meal times at a comparatively reasonable cost.

And another vote for Zooplus, saved me a small fortune over the years especially when the dear departed Boycat had to be on Renal food.

SuperGreens · 12/06/2024 18:32

Mine love the premium aldi pouches, but they do eat quality biscuits from zooplus as well.

Beamur · 12/06/2024 18:38

Mine have grain free James Wellbeloved.
A mixture of popular branded wet food, Sheba, Gourmet Perle, etc plus some plain, cooked or raw, fish and meat.
Basics frozen white fish or salmon trimmings, bit of mince or meat we're having, plain poached chicken (frozen) - I don't think it's more expensive than premium cat food and is not processed.
Zooplus is a really good website for cat food and often has smaller packets so you can try without committing to a huge bag.
