Finding a cat food. Grr.

Ok, so our cat (Bastardthulu) used to have Hill's - until he wouldn't eat it. We think that next door used to give him wet food, as he started whining all the time. Then we gave him pouches, but they just seemed so wasteful that we started using tins. But then the tins we were using seemed to go off straight away, so we switched to Katkin. He ate that for a while, but now he won't eat it at all, and just stands there, whining at us. FFS. He does hunt mice (we live across the road from a farm), and he does not look undernourished at all! (He's a big bastard). HELP!! What can we give him that's not plastic pouched, that he might actually fucking eat? (He's 10, and otherwise perfectly healthy).

Untamed? Nice tins of good quality food.

My cat (17) needs a mixture of small tins, pouches and trays. Won't eat the same flavour twice in a row (bit like me really)! Current mix is Lillys Kitchen Shredded Fillets, Purina Gourmet Succulent Delights, Sheba Sauce Lovers trays, Purina Gourmet Perle sachets. He hates jelly so everything has to be in gravy, sauce ir broth... I also put a few crispy treats on top (Whiskas Dentabites etc) for texture. He also has a small bowl of dry cat food available at all times. The key is to mix it up so he doesn't get bored.

Untamed is expensive but they do a trial pack for £8 then it's a subscription. We took the sub out for a month and two days after she went off them. Little bugger. We not alternate between Felix and Untamed and she seems to be okay with this.

Is your objection to pouches just based on the amount of waste? Because they can actually be recycled, just not with normal household waste. We take ours to our local recycling centre.

Mamathulu · 11/06/2024 18:19

Thanks @fieldsofbutterflies - I would, but as I'm bedbound, and we have two dcs with disabilities, I can't really add a trip to the recycling centre for DH or one of my carers. But DH did get a few tins of gourmet and other foods to try. He's already turned his nose up at #1! :D We'll get there!

When my old cat got towards end of life she stopped eating Hills and became very fussy. We tried her with everything and the winner was Aldi own brand Ocean fish. I was very relieved as it was the cheapest option too. Might that work for your cat?

We had blink for a while til cats went off it. It's in pouches but if you order from Blink they provide a prepaid bag to send them back for recycling.
Currently eating animonda carny in cans after much trial and error

caringcarer · 11/06/2024 23:04

If the car blokes pouches best then in my house pouches he'd have. My 2 cats have 3 pouches between them morning and another 3 at night and 1 pouch each for lunch. They are not keen on the kibble and I've tried 3 or 4 different varieties.

Mamathulu · 11/06/2024 23:16

Well, we'll definitely give those a try. I'd be so happy if we got away with the Aldi ones! 😄

My cats both devoured Untamed, it smelt so good I was tempted. It's expensive though and one cat is on a vet diet now so I don't get it anymore.

Buy a multipack of catfood.
this automatically rules it out as being interesting to the cat!

If you do this enough times you have a vast store of brands and you can rotate them around to avoid the bored refusal! Or swap with catty friends.

If your tinned stuff is going off could you portion and freeze?
