Fucking cat has let a live mouse loose in the bedroom and I can't find it!

She's normally very good about only bringing her 'friends' into the garden clearly she needs an urgent reminder of this etiquette

It's now 4AM. She announced her arrival with the mouse half an hour ago, I leapt out of bed and tried to catch it in a deodorant cap, but it was too big to go in! Oddly enough, I didn't have any suitable container to hand... Anyhow, it managed to run away and get behind a chest of drawers, and has now escaped from there and is under the bed. Somewhere. I can't find it😥

I've been moving furniture whilst swearing at the cat, but I can't be noisy because DS has an A-level exam today, and his bedroom is below mine.

I'm back in bed with a mouse somewhere beneath me, but obviously can't sleep.

My cat is an arse.

Sorry OP but this made me cackle!

Not sure I could sleep knowing there was a mouse on the loose but I'm weak like that.

Donotgogentle · 04/06/2024 04:24

Look on the bright side - new family pet?

Dustyblue · 04/06/2024 04:27

Genuine question from someone who's never owned a cat- do they generally bring their prey in alive? I thought they killed it. Why won't your cat finish the job? 😆

Gumbo · 04/06/2024 04:27

Well apparently I'm weak like that too😁. Sodding animal (the cat, not the mouse).

I've no idea where the bloody thing is, it hasn't made a noise or shown itself, although have a horrible suspicion it will suddenly appear on my pillow or something equally dreadful!

Actually, I think I've got one of those tunnel humane traps downstairs, I may go and stick some brie in it and shove it under the bed...

Dustyblue · 04/06/2024 04:34

Yes go get the trap. You won't be sleeping anyway.

Have some brie & crackers yourself. Maybe a glass of wine.

😂a bit early for wine I think...

Well I've set the trap, I think I'll go out cycling for an hour since I'm up anyway. Not sure what I'll do if I don't catch the wretched thing though... I'll ponder on that when I'm cycling🤔

My cat did this recently, she doesn't kill them she just likes to watch them. I still don't know for sure where the mouse went but the cats lost interest after we last saw it in our hallway. I suspect it ran through a hole in the floor hatch that gives access to under the house, although I'd rather think it politely ran through the front door 😂

Our cat always brings mice (and birds) in alive and then releases them; the number of times we’ve been up in the middle of the night trying to catch them 😬 The cat just plays with them.

Cats find it much easier catching mice, that’s for sure. Mice are fast! We’ve learnt to let the cat recatch it and then carry the cat outside before making him release it (then keeping the cat in for a few hours).

We have a number of humane traps and I think they caught a couple in the early days, but they’ve wised up and haven’t gone in one since.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 04/06/2024 06:05

We use peanut butter rather than cheese. Mice love it.

teatimeplease · 04/06/2024 06:11

Oh the live version of mouse trap.. how fun at 4am!

I've had to play it a couple of times, the last time it ended up being sucked up the hoover with the bag then left open outside by DP, who'd had enough of my efforts!

I hope there's a resolution by the time you get back.

On a separate note, mine put a live (injured) bird in my handbag once which was fun

Pepperama · 04/06/2024 06:13

Oh no, our cat used to do this all the time. Humane mousetrap all the way! Hope all that commotion didn’t wake your A-level kid

BurbageBrook · 04/06/2024 06:18

My cat brings me live mice all the time 😞 absolutely horrible

Mercurial123 · 04/06/2024 06:31

Agree with peanut butter on rice cake. I have a small caged ethical mouse trap.

Yes they do. I've had live mice, rats, squirrels, rabbits, birds. And I live in a town!

MarmiteChocolate · 04/06/2024 06:41

Oh this made me giggle! My cat likes to bring in baby birds and watch them slowly die whilst they hide under the sideboard. Cats are wankers!

Gumbo · 04/06/2024 06:44

@Dustyblue My hunting cat isn't selective about the state of the pulse of her catch, she's just delighted to have brought me a gift! Mostly she kills them, but I've often had to set some poor sod free down by the river including 2 snakes that I thought were dead but weren't

Anyhow, I've been for a cycle, had a shower...and checked the trap. Which of course, is still full of brie (and a small piece of chocolate, just in case the mouse prefers that). I know that peanut butter is preferable, but I don't have any...but I love it, and it's a good excuse buy some, so I will go out later and do that.

In the meanwhile, naughty killer cat is sleeping happily on the bed, so clearly there's been no sign of the mouse or she'd have got it 😕

This sounds like a great result! Sadly it won't happen here, since the bedroom is on the top floor of a 3-storey house, with no escape plan except the door and a lot of stairs...

Ugh. Lock the cat in with the mouse and go sleep on the sofa.
We had to dismantle a bed recently when this happened. Make sure cat is there to do the catching.

I am now firmly a dog owner after years of live mice, birds and FROGS!! We also once had a half frozen chicken (ie stolen off someone's counter whilst defrosting?) and a still warm Yorkshire pudding 😬

Gumbo · 04/06/2024 06:55

@daffodilandtulip I'm not sure I'd have preferred a warm Yorkshire pudding in my bedroom to a live mouse at 03:30😂

The cat has helpfully installed herself on the bed so I'm hoping she'll redeem herself and solve the problem soon...

Sorry should've said I'm in Australia. Not too early here!

ranoutofquinoaandprosecco · 04/06/2024 07:27

I found a live mouse in my daughters pit of a room that once of our DCats must have brought in and it was living its best life, eating all the crumbs from the snacks my DD eats and made itself a nest in a bucket of her cuddly toys! Felt a bit sorry for it when I sent it packing back outside!

Octaviathethird · 04/06/2024 07:38

Are you sure the mouse hasn't escaped under the door? I've had to install a draught excluder at the bottom of my bedroom door because my cat likes to drop alive mice rather than eat them and one once came under the door, leaving the cat sitting in the hallway scratching at my door, luckily the scratching woke me and the mouse had jumped in the bin so it was an easy catch!

Freysimo · 04/06/2024 07:42

Been through this many times. Leave it to the professional (cat), they'll get the mouse in the end.
