worms

I think my kitten has worms. I had her dropped off and when I got her, she absolutely stank. I had to bath her three times, it was as if she had been rolling around in a litter tray. I'm worried that I could have caught them now from handling her and from eggs on her fur getting on everything. I feel sick (emotionally). What am I meant to do, boil wash everything ? Not wash her food bowl in the kitchen sink ? Also I'm not clear on how often to give her the meds

What age is the kitten?
Has she been vet checked?
I get flea and worm treatment from the vet

She's 10 weeks, she hasn't seen a vet yet. I bought some from the pet shop, weighed her and crushed the dose into a cat yogurt. She wouldn't eat it so I'll try later when she's hungry

For that age I think we used liquid panacur and it was given by syringe.

What one did you buy?

I got Johnsons tablets, crushed them up. I'll look at yours as liquid would be better to hide in food

or syringe, that might work

I would get the worm stuff from the vets, you can get flea treatment at the same time.

Over the counter stuff is hit and miss as to whether it will work or harm the kitten.

thisisreallygross · 31/05/2024 13:15

Will the vet actually apply the treatment ?

Panacur is good and safe for kittens.

Poor little kitten hasn't had the best start wee soul.

I'd therefore defo suggest a vet appointment as you don't seem to be an experienced cat owner and that would help you settle her into her new home. I know it costs money but you sound like you have questions and they can help you with them. They can also administer wieners and deflea meds to her.

You may also wish to consider insurance for the kitten. You don't know what medical issues may arise that you aren't prepared financially to deal with. Some insurance policies have 24 hour telephone access to a vet nurse who can offer advice. That could be helpful too.

The kitten will need neutered. Have you budgeted for that? This can be anywhere from about nine months upwards I think so that's another question for the vet.

It's advised to spay/neuter around 4 months
I'd also recommend insurance
A vet can check the kitten over and give advice about flea and worm treatments

Yeah i need to take her to get her jags and to talk about spaying when she's a little older so can have a conversation with the vet about this @Elieza Will be getting insurance too

Thanks Demented - my kitten many years ago was speyed at 9 months as she was apparently too small for earlier!

I stupidly presumed all the same but there you go.

Even cat owners of over a decade like me need pointers now and again when unfamiliar with kittens!

That's why it's good to get to the vet for advice. It's just when you start needing stuff done it gets dearer. But with your little one being raised in not the best circs you'll want to keep yourself right op and give her a better start now she's with you and out of that horrible place she came from.

Thanks for the cat tax photo Gorgeous kitten.

Yeah, we will be seeing vet next week for immunisations and can have a chat. I did think, how could they not have noticed or even washed her properly being so dirty. She's a lovely little thing, very chilled and quiet, and she's slowly starting to seek out affection and let me hold her
