Kittens just been spayed is this normal?

Our 5 1/2 month old kittens have just been spayed this afternoon and sent home with the kitten t shirts/jumpers.
They are well and surgery went but are freaking out and angry about having the t shirts on. One kitten is now used to it and just walking along a bit funny and wobbly on her back legs because of the jumper. The other kitten the feistier one is not tolerating the jumper at all and growling and hissing at it being on.
We've now tried her with the cone and she's not happy with that either.
She is tolerating the cone a bit better than the jumper but keeps trying to go through spaces that she can't fit now because of the cone 🤦🏻‍♀️
Help!
What is usually best?
Should we persevere with one of the other?

Thank you 🙏🏼

Mine never wore either and recovered absolutely fine.

Have you tried a donut collar?

LiveLifeToTheFull2 · 29/05/2024 20:48

Oh really. That's good to know I am seriously debating whether to take them off it's just stressing them both out so much.
Now we have another problem, the black sister is growling and hissing at her sister because she's got the jumper on and I guess she thinks she looks strange 🙈 She's just sat with her eyes wide staring at her growling 😏

Some kittens simply Do Not Wear Clothes. Ours were able to get out of them in a few minutes no matter what we did. We gave up after the 10th time of them wriggling out (even though I had altered the clothes to make the leg holes smaller and more escape proof)

P.s. it's a rule of mumsnet that you cannot post a query about kittens without a pic of said kittens. We demand kitten pics.

I had three.

Two got the cone off forty minutes after leaving the surgery.

As long as they aren't licking or annoying the wound you are probably ok.

They'll be more at risk of ripping their stitches if they're stressed and frightened. I'd take the clothes/collars off and just keep an eye on them, honestly.

Gorgeous kittens!

LynetteScavo · 29/05/2024 21:36

I've never heard of cat t-shirts! If they're not working well for your cat take them off. My cats managed without them.

Do they have stitches?

when mine were spayed about 20 years ago they had a teeny tiny hole in the middle of a shaved patch about the size of a 50p. No stitches, no collar, nothing. They barely noticed.

My 2 freaked out at the kitten onesies I bought. Had to go back to the vets for cones of shame for them both. The first day they hated them but after that they tolerated them quite well. By day 3 they were used to them and didn’t try and run when it was time to put them back on.
Good luck to your gorgeous girls

We tried cones with our 3 youngest and failed! All were just fine. They barely licked their wounds and recovered quickly.

Our oldest boy, 14, had a cone recently after an op and whilst still recovering from the drugs, sneaked out, caught a rat and ate it on the lawn all with his cone on!

mondaytosunday · 29/05/2024 22:17

Mine had cones and they lasted about two hours. I kept an eye on them and it was fine.

Beamur · 29/05/2024 22:22

My kittens went absolutely loopy post OP. Really hyper and totally freaking out about their surgical baby grows! They were either bouncing off the wall or lying on the floor refusing to move.
I took the things off and just kept a close eye on them. It does get a bit itchy as it heals and if they lick too much at the stitches you might need a collar or soft cone.

Toddlerteaplease · 29/05/2024 22:25

My girl didn't tolerate a crazy or a cone. So I took it off. She was fine.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 29/05/2024 22:25

You can buy bitter apple spray which will stop them licking, look on Amazon.

Ineedaholidayyyy · 29/05/2024 22:26

Little cuties 😍

I've never heard of cat jumpers being used , is this a new thing?

My older one had a cone which she ripped off within a matter of hours. I had to keep and eye on her but she was fine and recovered well.

My 2 boys I have no idea about as they were spayed at the rescue centre

QOD · 29/05/2024 22:38

We called our cat sized dog Roudini instead of Roo when she was spayed. I only had to blink and she was out of her baby grow 😂
she also has a pinhead so no cone would stay on. Such. Fun.

Daffyyellow · 29/05/2024 22:39

I thought my kitten would cope better in a suit than a cone. She acted like one of those cellophane fortune telling fish. I had to ring the vet and ask if they’d seen her walking after her op. She tried to bite me when I removed the suit - I was worried she would injure herself with her dramatics. She strolled off as if nothing had perturbed her. She never touched her incision whilst I was watching and healed without issue. Some cats just do not tolerate the protection offered post op.

midnights0 · 29/05/2024 23:04

My boy and girl have both been done & either of them didn't wear a cone or a shirt and healed perfect. With my girl I just kept a closer eye on her if she tried licking the area to much
