What can I do to stop my cat peeing?!

I really need some advice. I have a 1.5 year old ragdoll. He has started weeing on rugs, cushions and beds (not spraying, full on wee).

I work from home so he has loads of attention/ play / fuss, but over the last couple of months, he has peed where he shouldn't around 12-15 times.

He has access to 3 litter trays. I empty them at least twice a day. He still does some wees in there, so I don't think it is litter related.

He has never had any issues with training. Even as a kitten he never had accidents. The only other time he did this was when we were away for a week and had a cat sitter - so it could be stress related.

We have taken him to the vet and he cannot find an issue with his bladder. He put him on a special diet for a month, but it has not made any difference.

We have another ragdoll (his brother) and they do sometimes fight, but overall, they get on fairly well.

Sorry for the essay! Has anyone had success dealing with anything like this. I'm not sure what I can do to try and stop him from doing it.

Any suggestions?

We had this, put kitty on Gabapentin for a month and put contact on the bottom of the windows (to obscure vision) and spritz vanilla in a bottle of water to make a new smell. The outside cats were bothering him.
It has been a few years now and Kitty is as good as gold.

Thanks again everyone, this has been really helpful.

That show sounds very interesting @CormorantStrikesBack I dont suppose you remember the name of it? I'll look into getting safe places for him to hide as well.

Fingers crossed we both get it sorted!

Tv show was My Cat From Hell I think. Jackson galaxy was definitely the host.

Thanks for the recommendation @fluffykittylover Another thing to try. Glad to hear it's possible to break the habit!

That's brilliant @CormorantStrikesBack I'll try and find it. Thanks for your advice.

My cat does this when there is a fox in the garden. I put foil down over the likely spots - that stops him. I also use feliway, and give him lots of places to climb and scratch

Just a heads up about Jackson Galaxy - he talks a lot of sense but there's definitely a lot of "woo" in there as well.

His style isn't for everyone - personally I love his show but he can a bit odd Grin

Just in case anyone comes back to this thread for similar issues, the programme referred to above was Season 10 Ep.2 of My Cat from Hell on Animal Planet. Thanks for mentioning it @fieldsofbutterflies

(I enjoyed it, but I see what you mean about Jackson Galaxy. What's with the guitar case?! He never got out a guitar 🤔)

It was really interesting about securing the borders of your house so that your cats feel secure inside their home.

We definitely have a cat that sleeps on our doormat, so I'm going to look into how I can deter it from getting so close to the house.

Thanks again for all the help!

The guitar case is because he's also a musician Grin

CatPeeIssues · 29/05/2024 20:18

That makes more sense!

I really liked his approach. I'm going to watch some more, as I learned something from his other case in that episode as well. (A kitten biting a couples young kids).

It sounds most likely he is stressed by his brother's presence. We had a male cat that would wee inside when stressed by other cats. Some cats are just better suited to being the only cat in a household

He is very good and we've solved a lot of low-level issues by following his advice over the years. I've watched all his shows and often think "WWJG do?" lol.

Glad you found the show and found it helpful.

Apologies @CormorantStrikesBack I realised it was you that recommended the programme - thanks!

I'm definitely going to have a look for episodes about dealing with fighting as I'm sure he will have some good advice.

They definitely don't hate each other, it's just a few minutes a day that they fight, so I need to explore what triggers it. They groom each other and happily curl up and sleep together, so I think it's a problem that can be solved.
