Fractured Calcaneus - ripped stitches out

I'm not sure what I'm looking for, but I'm so totally fed up and massively stressed about my stupid cat.

He's 10 months, been going outside for 2 months but no cat flap yet so he's only out for an hour or so at a time.

3 weeks ago he was limping, then hiding. I dragged him out from under the bed and took him to the emergency vet, who diagnosed a sprain.

5 days in I had a video call with the insurance vet who was happy with his progress. I wasn't though, as he was still limping a lot after a week. Vet x-ray showed a fracture and he had surgery a week ago.

He's on a cocktail of drugs to keep him calm, which don't seem to be working. He has to be crated for 6 weeks. This was originally the main cause of my stress, but it quickly got worse when he kept escaping the buster collar. He pulled the plaster off so I took him back early for a checkup. Vet wouldn't put another plaster on as it'd heal quicker without.

We're now a week post surgery. By some miracle the collar is now staying on, but he's managed to pull his stitches out and open the wound WITH THE COLLAR ON!!

Back at the emergency vet tonight and they couldn't staple or stitch without sedation (they tried), so he's back in tomorrow to be sedated a re-stitched. I can hear him crying and fighting to get out of the crate.

I have a friend proving great real life support (ex vet nurse), and I do feel awful for the stupid cat. But I just feel so low. I've had cats my whole life and this has totally thrown me. With hindsight I would not have got another cat. The stress of the situation is giving me headaches. I wish I could just fall asleep and wake up once its over. But will it ever be over?

I would not be agreeing to try and save it. It's not fair on the cat. He's had a good go and it's not healed.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 03/07/2024 19:44

Oh no,poor boy. I would go with the amputation, no way would I be able to cope with a miserable crated cat x

ChandlersMum · 25/07/2024 13:29

We're a week in and he's coping well. The stupid collar is bothering him more than the missing leg, but he can't be trusted to leave the stitches alone.

It does not slow him down!

Sorry for reviving an old thread, but I just wanted to give a quick update and show that the amputation was absolutely the right option for us and doesn't slow him down at all...he's still a total pain in the arse, and apart from not being able to run in a straight line, there's not much else he can't do.

Oh he's lovely! I looked after my friend's cat (tuxedo too) and he had to have his leg amputated due to cancer. I can't believe how quickly he recovered! I don't even think the vet put a cone on him. He advised me to keep him in while he recovered but he was an escape artist and the vet said in the end to just let him out as it would be causing more stress. He never had any issues or infections and lived another 7 more years before dying of old age.

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor please tell me what "room on a fox" is a typo for in your first post! I'm usually quite good at guessing but no clue and need to know 😀

Oops sorry- didn't realise this was such an old post- guess I'll never know now!

Ha ha, my stupid phone makes things up. He had a fight with a fox!

Thanks so much for travelling back in time to satisfy my curiosity!

Sorry for resurrecting this old thread again.
Not even sure why I'm updating, but maybe you will understand my pain.

Chandler had a year with one missing leg, he lived life to the fullest and could not be contained or slowed down. He was an absolute fool and ultimately, not very successful at being a cat.

Last night he broke his other leg. I caged him and booked an emergency appointment, but he escaped while I was on the phone to the vet. I have absolutely no idea how.
I couldn't retrieve him until this morning - I had to crawl around on my hands and knees under next doors tree. By that point he had totally given up trying to escape and just let me carry him, leg hanging.

The kindest option, and really our only option, was euthanasia. So unfortunately his short life is over.

The photo is peaceful, but I know some may find it upsetting so I've marked it at sensitive.

Oh so sorry. But glad you did go for amputation in the end, and he lived his life to the fullest. Sounds like he had a great life with you.

Puppylucky · 06/08/2025 11:51
