We have a cat who is 8 and was feral when he came to us. He's really tame now but there are certain bits we never trained and he's still pretty wild. Refuses to use a litter tray and wants access outside all the time.

He had a really dreadful accident Tuesday, I picked him up a realised the whole of his 'armpit' was pulled open like a banana. He had surgery but obviously needs to be kept in... It's not going well.

He's so stressed he's peeing everywhere, hasn't pooed since the surgery and he has a yowl like a Bengal/Siamese which he keeps up for hours and hours.

We're all exhausted, especially me as I am sleeping on the sofa making sure he's ok and not getting tangled in his body suit /generally soothing him.

My sister is a vet in the US and said they often give a kitty sedative, I asked the vet surgery and they point blank said no and they said perhaps he'll learn from this 🙄 I have a post op appt tomorrow and I've going to ask the vet directly rather than the receptionist. Does anyone know if they do give sedatives here ?

What else can I do? I'm on my knees with tiredness and family that work from home are finding it hard as he's SO loud.

He's so miserable,poor boy😢

I've ordered more litter trays so will dot them in every corner . He did actually stand in the tray earlier but went up the wall 🤣🙄 I've protected the wall now so🤞

I can’t really help but I’m so sorry for your poor boy.
But it doesn’t sound right that they can’t give him something? Is he still in pain?
Our cat has gabapentin for a pain issue and it makes him extremely sleepy.

Sorry this happened. It's so stressful when they are unwell. We have had sedatives/pain relief from the vet post surgery twice - the same as the previous poster, gabapentin.

That's what my sister suggested . I will definitely ask for it tomorrow.

We've bought him a collar and lead so we can take him out in the garden and he might do a poo then, poor boy STILL hasn't been.

He's been asleep all afternoon which probably means he'll be up all night!

I'm going to try and get some shut eye. Vet's in the morning.

I find lots of dreamies has a laxative effect. And they love it! Fingers crossed for your poor wee guy.

Unfortunately he can't have dried food at all as he had a terrible UTI so has been on wet ever since.

We both slept 11 30- 5 45 on the sofa!!! At the moment he's still quiet and this time yesterday he'd been howling for hours.

He also did a wee in the vague location of the litter tray, going to buy puppy pads today!

I hope he's feeling a bit better!

But on a side note, I've known plenty of cats who have had UTI's (including two of my own) and none of them have ever stopped having dreamies - did the vet tell you he wasn't allowed them?

As long as they're just the odd treat I really don't see the issue personally!

Yes the Vet said no dry food at all ever. We give him Lick e Lix instead. He was extremely ill and need an operation/catheter.

We are both a bit better after a decent sleep 🤣

Have you seen the vet yet @MrsPelligrinoPetrichor ? Hoping for good advice when you do, poor kitty and poor you!
(You obviously love him to be so caring and to make plans to cope with his little accidents)

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 24/05/2024 13:14

Vet said he's healing really well but still needs to be in. She said he isn't constipated so he'll go when he's ready. I asked for Gabapentin and I got some 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 Moral of the story is don't rely on the receptionist to give correct advice. Next time I'll ask her to check with the vet.

He's actually loads more settled after last night's big sleep so I won't use it unless necessary.

Just looking at proper litter boxes as he's going to stay in at night from now on and we'll lock the cat flap. I'm not keeping him in during the day, he'll be utterly miserable but he can stay in at night from now on.

When my friend's cat had his leg amputated he kept managing to get outside. He and his sister could open all the doors in the flat and managed to break open the catflap twice. The vet said if it's causing him distress to let him out and just keep an eye on the wound.

Our little cat is recovering from a cat fight and an infected wound and I asked our vet if we should keep her in and she said not if she seems distressed.

Poor thing 😢

The wound has to be covered as there are so many stitches and they're long and to stop him licking it he has to wear a baby grow type suit, it can easily get caught so he can't go outside until he's not wearing it.

We've had a much calmer day, he's mastered the art of the litter tray and even managed a poo- first one since Tuesday and when he got a bit anxious I have him half a Gabapentin and he's been snoozy ever since.

Hooray! 😸💩😸

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 25/05/2024 07:10

Hooray indeed! 🤣

He slept until 4am ,had some food then slept on me on the sofa until about 6.30. I'll try and give him his Gabapentin a bit later on and he might sleep right through tonight. It's such a massive improvement and he hasn't woken up all yowly and distressed either.
