Cat doesn’t know how to have sex…

We have a male and female Maine coon. He’s quite big comparatively. Apparently he was used for breeding before we got him, she hasn’t been bred before.

He’s been trying to mate with her but he’s a good three inches above her when he’s doing it. Her tail is in the way. He’s got no chance of getting in, but if I try to interfere and move her tail they give up.

She’s been giving him the come-on all week but he’s only tried to mate with her twice, I assume because he can’t figure it out.

is it hopeless?

Yes I'd give up, get them neutered and let them live a peacefully asexual life.

Ponderingwindow · 21/05/2024 19:19

I’m wondering what goes through someone’s mind with a post like this?

im going to go online and admit that not only are my cats not spayed and neutered, I am actively trying to encourage breeding.

INeedAnotherName · 21/05/2024 19:28

Sounds like this is the reason he is no longer used for breeding.

Quite frankly if you haven't got a good, genetically sound male or female, with a good, proven bloodline and a thorough vet check, you should not be breeding anything.

Stressybetty · 21/05/2024 19:50

Not sure if it's the same as for dogs but sounds like they are just flirting. Once she's ready she should stand for him and move her tail to the side.

Completely agree

So you are trying to get your cat pregnant ?

Why ?

is there an acute shortage of kittens ?

or you just want to make lots of money ?

Perfect response and I totally agree.

K0OLA1D · 21/05/2024 20:00

Book them both in with the vet to get them neutered. If you can't do that, rehome them.

HTH

lightinthebox · 21/05/2024 20:01

If you’re genuine why are you asking here? Why not a dedicated cat forum (several must surely exist).

lightinthebox · 21/05/2024 20:02

Quick look at prices of Maine Coon kittens. Ah, I see why OP is doing this.

MonsteraMama · 21/05/2024 20:06

Stop being an idiot and neuter them both, this is not how responsible breeders breed.

Maine Coons are not free easy money for inexperienced breeders to pump out sub par kittens that will all end up at Battersea. Pack it in.

Ihatemondays1962 · 21/05/2024 20:08

I am lost for words. It was irresponsible of whoever you got them from to give them to you unneutered/unspayed and even more irresponsible for you to now try and breed from them!

Singleandproud · 21/05/2024 20:08

Female cats need neutering to protect them against uterus infection and mammary cancers.

TwigTheWonderKid · 21/05/2024 20:10

Our local cat rescue is over run by Maine Coons. Please do the responsible thing and get them neutered rather than bringing more kittens into the world.

Scampuss · 21/05/2024 20:11

Stop being irresponsible and get them both neutered FFS 🤬

MrsApplepants · 21/05/2024 20:12

Yes give up and pop them down the vets to be neutered. And stop exploiting these poor creatures for a quick £

GoingRoundThatBlockAgain · 21/05/2024 20:17

If you have genuine Maine Coons you’ll have got them from a registered breeder, given their pedigrees, and likely signed a contract that you won’t breed from them.

If you don’t have their registered papers, what you have is two pretty long-haired moggies and you’re trying to make a quick buck passing your kittens off as MCs, which means you’re a back yard breeder with no idea if the parents are healthy.

It’s not healthy for female cats not to be spayed - they are at risk of UTIs, uterine cancer and pyometra.

I volunteer for a small rescue that is currently getting through about 150 pouches of kitten food per day because of criminally irresponsible idiots who can’t be arsed to spay their cats & then don’t take responsibility for the results. Tonight our volunteers rescued a litter of 5-day-old kittens.

Neutering should be compulsory in the same way as microchipping, except for licensed breeders.

Definitely this. I have a rescue cat who was completely traumatised from being made to breed. (She absolutely refused to do it)

mapleriver · 22/05/2024 02:24

Don't breed your pets together, get your cats neutered and if you want to breed, buy a GCCF active registered female, get a mentor and take her to a stud so you don't have a male pissing all over your house that doesn't even know what to do with a queen. Maine Coons are prone to HCM and other genetic faults, you might be breeding kittens that will drop dead on their new owners prematurely and any breeding MC should be tested for these issues before you breed.

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 22/05/2024 15:38

Have they been tested for breeding? You can’t just put two cats together and hope the kittens are healthy.
