Are the out of hours vets treating me like a blank cheque?

Please bear with me, as I'm quite upset right now so I'm hoping this makes sense.
My cat was attacked by an unnetured tom last Monday. Monday morning she went to our vets as she could barely stand and was clearly in pain. They sedated her to check for injuries, shaved her, did an ultrasound as she had a large mass to her abdomen and gave her pain relief. Cost £330 (she was covered in loads of bite marks too).
Went back on Friday for follow up, Mass had grown but she was otherwise well, and more mobile. So left with keep an eye, bring back if any changes, and we'll see her in a week.
Today when we woke I found that the mass had burst - abscess (which I knew it was although the vets didn't call it that, I've seen lots of cat abscesses before to recognise what it was) with her constantly licking the area to clean. She was tender in the area again after being okay for the last few days. I called the vets, which directed to the local out of hours service. They advised she should be seen. I took her along. They took her straight in without me for triage.
10 minutes later a vet came out and took me to the consulting room. She explained that she needed admitting for sedation, or quite probably a GA to drain the wound, IV abx, blood tests, fluids, and another ultrasound. They wanted to do the operation the same day, or overnight if they couldn't get it done in the day. She would hopefully be home the next day. Estimate of costs was 1.8-2.5k. I admit I was surprised at the cost given what my own vet had charged previously. But I thought that it would be best she is treated as they made out it was urgent to have the operation.
I rang at 8pm for an update and they didn't have anyone available to speak to me but said someone would call back. At 10pm and wanting to go to bed, I decided to call again. This time they said she was comfortable, had pain relief and IV abx. I said so has she had the operation then? Did it go okay? Oh, no she hasn't had the operation she said. So I said will it be tonight as I was told earlier then. No, apparently the workload doesn't allow. So I asked what that means for the cost. After some back and forth between her (receptionist) and the vet (I assume) I was still non the wiser.
Just as I was typing this, they have rang me back. The vet has said she has had a scan (which showed NAD exactly as it did earlier), blood tests, pain relief and IV fluids. So far this has cost 1.3k! They aren't sure what she will now need tomorrow, whether it will be a wound cleaned under GA, debriding, or just more IV abx and a longer stay. She said the wound clean is another £700, debriding £1500 and a minimum of £260 a day per stay plus the antibiotics if she needs that option.
What on earth do I do? These costs seem obscene to me, but I've never had to use a vet before for anything other than routine care.
Yes, she is insured. But it has a 4k limit! And that has to last her the rest of the policy year too (which renewal was in April!).
Do I go and collect her first thing? Take her to my vet? I asked them that too, but she said that she will have to be transfered back to them for overnight care. So am I just making things worse by doing that?
I feel totally lost and like they are escalating costs. For example she didn't need the scan. It was confirmed to not be a hernia, which is what the vet today said about the mass. I said she had already had a scan that ruled out any hernia. But they did it again anyway.
I'd appreciate any helpful advice.

Call them, tell them you absolutely do not approve any cost that will take you over your policy's limit.

LittleRebelGirl · 19/05/2024 23:06

I've made that clear to them. I'm just worried that they are racking up the costs as close to that limit as possible. What can I do if she becomes unwell or has another injury? Then we won't have any money left in the policy!

LittleRebelGirl · 19/05/2024 23:08

Never mind. I'm an idiot. Just checked the policy (more than, premier) and it's £4000 for each illness or injury each year. So if something else happens, that's covered at least.
Okay, that's one less worry.

Pick her up and take back to your own vet tomorrow.

We don't have pet insurance and oddly pay a lot less for illness than friends do. One vet charged 3.5k for an MRI which showed nothing a friend said. Kerching I thought.

LittleRebelGirl · 19/05/2024 23:34

I'll ring my vet, they don't open til 8.30 though. I'm just worried that they will have to send her back there in the evening and it will incur more costs.
Plus I'll be in trouble with work again as I already had to take time out last Monday for the vet visit. I'll have to do the same if I go and get her tomorrow morning. Ugh. Stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Defo ring your vet and ask them what the options would be

i Would also look into getting the insurance increased in the future. I learnt last year the hard way that £4k per illness is not near enough for a cat based on the cost of things like scans etc. We absolutely surpassed that and paid another few thousand on top. It was an awful time!

Snugglemonkey · 19/05/2024 23:47

I agree that £4000 is not enough really. You think it feels like a lot, but I had that limit several years ago and my cat developed renal issues. There was the treatment and then the special food etc. She cost me about 10k in the end. I so miss her though!

This.

And when we did have an unexpected vet bill, the practice offered several different payment options including afterpay and a payment plan direct with the vet.

We paid over a couple of months and it cost less than having insurance.

Toddlerteaplease · 20/05/2024 06:28

When my cat was at the emergency vet. They were very conscious of the insurance limits. Bit I do t know how they can possibly justify £388 just for a consultation. That's ridiculous. A video consult was only £25. And when I rang them to say I could t get an appointment, and that it was unfair to charge 10x the price, to be seen a vet rang me back.

Toddlerteaplease · 20/05/2024 06:42

I found a local vet hospital that did emergencies and it was much cheaper than the OOH. And they just kept her there.

fieldsofbutterflies · 20/05/2024 07:04

Some vet costs are absolutely extortionate- our vet doesn't even charge extra for OOH - I once took mine in with a suspected blockage at 11pm on NYE and it cost me less than £100 including medication 😬

Unfortunately some places really do take the piss with costs.

I have no advice about what to do unfortunately as none of mine have ever had an abscess or needed emergency surgery like this.

SabreIsMyFave · 20/05/2024 10:14

It's stories like this that make me determined that I will never EVER have any more pets after our (now quite elderly) cat has gone over the rainbow bridge. SO many vets now are utterly extortionate, and completely take the piss. Hope you get it sorted @LittleRebelGirl

AnnetteKurtan · 20/05/2024 13:11

How did you get on @LittleRebelGirl

LittleRebelGirl · 20/05/2024 13:12

She is coming home today, no operation. On oral antibiotics. £1500 for what? Fuck all basically. Observation, iv fluids (she was eating and drinking) pain relief (we already have at home from vets). She's been perfectly fine. They think the lump is swelling rather than the whole area being an abscess. I'll just take her back to my own vet if she needs it. Praying it isn't next weekend over the bank holiday....
I'm absolutely furious at the whole thing. Feels like a total racket.

Just had a shock. Dog not well so DH phoned for an appointment today. Yes but it's considered an emergency so £60 please.

What baffles me is how different vets have such different prices.

Some don't even charge extra for emergencies (ours) but others charge several hundred - it's insane.

I don't believe there's any reason to charge £60 (or more) for just a simple appointment on a Monday. If I needed a last minute appointment today I would be paying £18.

Only £60?!!!

Faduckssake · 20/05/2024 13:25

My cat had a massive abscess on her back from a bite. My vet gave pain relief and antibiotics and then the day after when the pain relief had kicked in, I bathed it myself in warm salt water, picked off the scab and drained and cleaned it myself. At no time did the vet suggested sedation, or operations. Possibly your cat's abscess was much deeper? It sounds to me like a vet covering themselves by going worse case scenario and charging accordingly.

Mindblownawaybyfog · 20/05/2024 13:26

5 years ago ddog had a mass. Locum said she needed antibiotics. 2 rounds of 14 days each. £180 a pop. Saw regular vet next appointment.. Said she was sure it was cancer. So bloody antibiotics weren't going to do anything! I was fuming. 4 week delay on surgery and 360 quid down.. Ended up handing over just under 2k.

Took another ddog last year. Limping. Offered 800 scan. No thanks she's just old and had been on holiday running off for 2 weeks. Been fine ever since.. Vet =look until they find something.
Dr =try not to look because cba to find anything!!

Toddlerteaplease · 20/05/2024 13:39

@justasking £44 bit they are open late evening and and weekend at no extra cost. But the OOH vet cost £380

I'm talking about a normal appointment same day which btw husband has admitted was £68. Come on apart from the jabs most appointments are urgent.

So kerching!!

LittleRebelGirl · 20/05/2024 13:44

My vets charge £33.50 for an appt. Same day or not. She gets 1 free vet appt a year as we pay monthly for flea, wormer and vaccinations.
I've attached some pictures from her injuries taken at the start of last week. When I get her home later I'll put another picture on.
I have actually drained an abscess before on another cat of mine (same unneutured tom attacked her in our own house). This wasn't as big as this though, so I was less concerned about doing that. I just took her and got abx and pain killers. Cost £100. But my other cats is huge. We'll, I thought it was. But it turns out it's more swelling rather than a HUGE abscess!
Kicking myself for not waiting til today. I phoned them as I didn't know what to do for the best. I should have gone on instincts.
