How are 2 cats different to having 1?

Having just had to say the saddest goodbye to our gorgeous little lady, we are thinking of getting a new cat to fill our hearts.
I would like to get two but I wondered how it works practically. Most importantly- do I need two litter trays?

I think the advice is to always have a tray each and a spare so 3.

I just have 1 tray now as the kitten is 10 months now and doesn't use it. The older cat hasn't used it for years.

yorkypuds · 20/05/2024 12:45

Where do you keep all the litter trays? I cannot even imagine where I would put 3!
I guess I will have to see how they are managing together in the rescue!

How many trays to some extent depends on the cats.

I've had 3 cats and one barely uses tray as they all went outside.

And now 2 cats with 3 trays as the sods come inside especially to use them.

Interesting. I often wonder if our lad would like a pal. But he came to us as a two-year-old and we know little of his previous life.

On one hand, he's totally unbothered by local cats, and seems keen to hang out with one in particular.

But of the little we do know about him, we were told he had to be rehomed (again) because the existing cat took a strong, sudden dislike to him.

He's a big character. I often think he wishes we were cats too. But if we were, we couldn't have jobs, and buy cat food.

So we ended up with 3!
Went to see 2 girls and they were sharing a pen with a boy who was determined to come with us. He kept launching himself onto our shoulders.

Oh cute!

EmpressaurusOfCats · 26/05/2024 16:10

Wonderful! Photos???? How old are they?

AnnaMagnani · 26/05/2024 16:13

Yay! How fabulous!

yorkypuds · 26/05/2024 16:39

The girls (unrelated) are huddled up together under a cupboard.
The boy has made himself at home and is in bed with the teenager!
Will post photos when they all come out!

A trio, how wonderful!

IME you really start to see their personalities once three are in the mix, and things get much more interesting. I have four and there's never a dull moment.

Oh no, huge regrets this morning! It is carnage!
Three young cats is so different to having my gorgeous gentle girl!
It's like a house full of toddlers!
The teenager who promised to look after them is nowhere to be seen!
It will get better won't it?

I had five cats at one stage, but can't help with litter trays as they all went outside. None of them got along, but didn't actually fight, and they would steal each other's food - even though it was all the same!

I only have one now, and he might well be the last cat I have. 😢 The main difference between having one or more cats is that the more there are, the more expensive it is.

Startingagainandagain · 27/05/2024 09:12

A bit more work (two litter trays) and more expensive in term of vet/feeding and insurance.

The advantage is that they can keep each other company and play together.

I have one cat but my neighbour's cat really likes her and he spends most of his time in my garden playing with her so she has company, but I get to give him back to his owner in the evenings!

They’ll calm down as they get older! It will also be easier once they’re able to go out.

You could open the teenager’s bedroom door & drop a few Dreamies in there…

Toddlerteaplease · 27/05/2024 09:23

It will get better. In two weeks in, to introducing a bit to my gentle girl. She doesn't like him. But he's calmed down a lot in the last few days.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 27/05/2024 09:25

Three is a very good number, I'm afraid it's always carnage here with four cats 🤣

Would love some photos please OP.

Floralnomad · 27/05/2024 09:30

Sounds like you have your hands full now @yorkypuds 🐾

MrsDTucker · 27/05/2024 10:48

I have a 6 year old cat and the 10 month kitten will not leave my cat alone.

As you have 3 kittens they will probably annoy each other but my older cat is on edge everytime she hears a noise 😞😞😞

LordSnot · 27/05/2024 11:55

It will get better! They're confused and unsettled but will soon realise this is home.

You didn't say how old they are? Kittens are bloody hard work but they grow quickly.

Three young cats is quite a lot to handle, especially if you've gone from "0 - 3" overnight.

It will get better though, just give them a chance to settle in.

yorkypuds · 27/05/2024 12:09

They are a 2 year old boy, and 2 7 month girls. All unrelated!
2 are asleep next to me, I've not seen the shy girl for ages.
The teenagers defence was that they spent the night jumping on her face and running around her room!

I’ve got 7 indoor cats - it gets better. They grow up, they slow down, they start sleeping all day.

It will all kick off occasionally, when you least expect it. Part of the fun.

LordSnot · 27/05/2024 12:49

7 month old kittens are teenagers! A hilarious, exasperating nightmare. Try to embrace the chaos because in a few short months they'll be grown ups and you'll miss their gangly antics 😁

fieldsofbutterflies · 27/05/2024 13:53

Seven months is the insane teenage stage Grin

They do calm down - my youngest is just turning one and while he still has his moments, he's much calmer than he was.
