New cats - knocking stuff over and bonded pairs

I have recently acquired two beautiful tabby male relatives from a rescue centre. They're about 3 or 4, one quite shy (enjoying strokes and a little explore, but hiding when there's any noise) and one very confident who was swaggering around within minutes of arrival. They've been here just over a day. Pics attached - easy to guess which is which!

2 questions, as I've not owned cats for many years and am feeling like an anxious parent (sorry):

  1. The shy male seems scared of his companion. Confident boy has swiped a couple of times, nothing awful, but the shy one seems very aware of his relatives movements and has hissed. Normal, given the disruption, or do they actually not like each other?
  2. On the first night we shut them in our living room with tray, food etc. All fine till this morning when we heard some crashes. TV, side table, books, all knocked down. Do I need to start nailing everything I own to the wall, or might they calm down once they're more settled/have space? I've read about foil etc., to protect surfaces and have moved breakables but I would ideally like keep books and furniture out!

What gorgeous boys!

With regards to the crashing around, my cat seems to get the zoomies for a random half hour every morning when she’ll run up and down like mad, so it might have been that and because they were confined to one room they ended up knocking things over?

As to whether they like each other or not, you probably need to give it more time to figure that out, they may be happier once they can get away from one another and have space if they want it.

Congratulations on your new family members though, I’m sure they’ll bring you lots of joy

Ah welcome to your furry overlords. Knocking stuff over - completely normal. It's more fun if you don't want them to do it. They will settle with each other!

Agree with @Melon2312 once they've got the run of the place they will settle down.

If you're sure they know where the toilet is I'd let them into the rest of your house esp as they're not kittens and are a pair.

Thanks all - they had the run of the flat last night, and nothing knocked over this morning (although someone jumped on my head a few times/hunted my feet in the night between asking for cuddles!).

Definitely a bit of wee on the bottom of the stairs near the outside door, though, despite them being very good with the tray previously. I've cleaned with enzyme spray and have moved one of the trays closer to where the accident was (as they maybe got lost...?).

Probably a good idea to have the trays in two different places. I have read that with two cats you should ideally have 3 trays, one each plus one extra, if you have the space to accommodate another?
