Cost of fitting a cat flap

cultjarteriaky · 08/05/2024 08:34

I was quoted £160 to have a cat flap fit in a UPVC door leading to a balcony - cat flap not included in the price.

I’m in London, is this a fair price?

The guy has a professional website and only does cat and dogs flaps. Responded quickly by email and quoted after seeing pics of the door and the flap I intend to buy.

It was a recomendation.

No I can’t DIY and I had a flap in similar door in the past and the panel looked ruined and was very ugly so I will want reassurance of a perfect finish.

But is too expensive for this kind service? I have no idea.

Much cheaper than what we paid!

Mindymomo · 08/05/2024 09:26

I suspect that’s an average price to pay. My DH did ours, only took about 30 minutes, but you’ve got to get it right and have correct tools.

Clarich007 · 08/05/2024 10:01

It cost me £100 about 4 years ago just for fitting.Total bill including cat flap was £160.
Seems a reasonable price.

AnnaMagnani · 08/05/2024 10:02

I think that's cheap!

cultjarteriaky · 08/05/2024 10:33

Oh thanks so much, I will go ahead ad the guy seems very professional and has youtube videos of himself fitting flaps on all kinds of doors

The flap itself will be basic as I dont need to worry about other cats coming in

Thanks everyone!

Ours was about the same and I’m in London. Wonder if it’s the same man. Ours is an older man. He also only fits cat and dog flaps. If it’s him he’s really good and a lovely gent. Our house already had an old cat flap and he tried to fix it first but had to instal a new one.

Galliano · 08/05/2024 21:50

Fitting of mine was £45 so it sounds steep to me.
I'm in Yorkshire though.

Firts name starts with M and last name with W

I paid similar a few years ago to have one put in a UPVC door, took a while and tbh it looks fab - it's totally secure / watertight and works really well.

Ah no, not the same person. I had no idea it was possible to make a living just flitting flaps into homes!

whirlyhead · 09/05/2024 06:39

I’ve been quoted €1000 for installing one in a glass door as the whole pane needs replacing so that sounds cheap!

GoodVibesHere · 09/05/2024 06:46

Ours was £400 total so that sounds v good to me

FranKubelik · 05/06/2024 11:34

Hi @cultjarteriaky . Would you mind sharing the details of your fitter? I’m having problems finding anyone to replace my cat flap which has a broken catch. Just been quoted £300 (this doesn’t include the new cat flap which I bought separately). Seems steep as it’s the same model so no alteration to door needed. Thanks

Sotired22 · 05/06/2024 15:27

@FranKubelik if you are just replacing like for like surely you don’t need someone to do it for you? The skill is in cutting the hole and having the right tools for that, you already have that done so just take your current broken cat flap off and replace with the same one but new?

Shellingbynight · 05/06/2024 15:42

@FranKubelik that is a ridiculous price for fitting a new identical flap, and as the previous poster said all the hard work is already done. I've refitted an identical flap when the old one was broken. There should be youtube videos to help you with the sequence.

With some cat flaps you can also get 'parts' so you don't have to renew the entire flap, just the broken bit. We have a Sureflap and we've had a new catch and a new door for it, rather than the whole thing.

I will not share his details because he came all the way here but refused to come up to my flat because he is claustrophobic and don’t do lifts.

He could have sent his tools in the lift and come by stairs - I do all the time

Also he knew I was in a flat - but maybe assumed it was ground floor - 3 days before he was due to come I even sent him a picture of my block because there are lots of similar blocks in my estate and the majority of people gets confused - he didn’t even think to clarify what floor I was on

So on the day, he came, I buzzed him in but he never showed up, I was waiting by my front door. When I checked my phone there was a text message saying he could’t do it because of the lift.

And I’m still looking for somebody else

@cultjarteriaky omg what a joker! He could've got a load of new business through your thread.
Hope you find someone. I need one fitted in a single glazed patio door, not had one before. Hoping it wouldn't be more than what you said.

I understand if he is claustrophobic but the problem is that he didn’t even want to work with me. I’d be more than happy to go down and collect tools etc. I know climbing stairs is a pain but better than letting your customers down. Also what kind of person see the word ‘flat’ on an address than se a photo of a high rise, and knowing they have a problem with lifts, don’t think to clarify?

I do wonder if they gave up once they saw I live in a council flat since in his website there is a video of him installing a cat flap on a glass door of a lovely house…because his explanation is just unbeliavable

Luckly the weather is good and the balcony door has been open. I have some time off work next week and will try to find somebody else, but I’ve been calling around and people never pick up the phone or don’t get back to me.
Who knew paying £££ to someone to install a cat flap is so complicated.

@cultjarteriaky I know. So bizarre re the flap man, I'm surprised he didn't claim he had a life threatening cat allergy!? Lol

I know right!

If I didn’t buzz him in I’d think he never left his bed but I spoke to him through the entryphone! So close yet so far 🤯🤣

@cultjarteriaky can I just ask, if the flap is fitted in your flat is it just to give the cat access to the balcony? Is there any other outdoor space he can get to? Just curious as my mate lives in a flat and recently got a cat and is worried about levels of access etc. my other mate has two, one on main back door and one on her flat door.
Sorry, I'm obsessed! Lol

Mammma91 · 08/06/2024 10:48

I paid a local joiner £60. I’m in Scotland.

IWantToBeASleepingCat · 08/06/2024 10:50

I'm in Yorkshire and got quoted £250 including the flap in a same door

I wanted the cat flap fitted on my balcony so I can leave the litter boxes there and the cats can have free access to the balcony without me having to worry about opening and closing the door.
I live up hight but the balcony is secure and they love observing the road and the sky from there

@cultjarteriaky thank you. That sounds like a good idea. Cats love outdoor space of any kind, and watching birds! 😀
