The cone of doom isn’t working!

Bit of a long one, sorry.

Our cat has recently had surgery on her paw to remove a toe. This stemmed from getting a small scratch on the pad which got infected, then licked to buggery, then more infected and eventually, after a long period of antibiotics barely touched the side, they decided amputation was the best solution.

However she will not leave it alone to heal. First bandage got flicked off within 4 hours, the second bandage (applied by a very £££ out of hours vet) lasted overnight before being discarded before breakfast. The vet suggested any further bandages would be dealt with in the same way so has left it be. I’ve just come into the living room to find her contorted around and CHEWING on the stitches, all the while wearing a cone!

Short of sitting next to her for the next X days and watching her like a hawk, are there any other options to stop this self-sabotage? I presume they don’t do extra long cones because it might interfere with drinking.

It sounds like the cone is the wrong size. Mine had to wear one last year for a lower leg injury and no way could she get her paw close to her mouth.

Can cats have the inflatable collars?

I thought there was no way she could reach too, but she’s stretching the injured paw right out and angling her shoulder forward to reach. Photos with cone & bandage #1

You need a cat donut collar. When I had my kitten spayed she just escaped from her cone, I bought her a body suite which was too big and she wriggled out of it, and eventually I got her a donut. Not only did she look adorable, it also stayed on a lot better. She did get it off some times, but a lot less than the cone. I think it bothers them less.

Oh, actually, sorry, I just saw that it is to stop her getting to her paw, so this might not work!

Mine was much more tucked into her cone than that, just the basic cheapy cone from the vets.
