How to get cat to stop using indoor litter

I have 4 cats but only one who uses the indoor litter tray. He was hand reared so hadn’t been outside until he turned one and we started letting him out. He doesn’t spend much time outside and can usually be found in the house or the garden. He actually comes in, uses the tray and then goes back outside. Definitely the weirdest cat we have owned for various reasons.
We don’t have the biggest house so nowhere for the tray to go other than in our kitchen dining room which we are used to but is a bit grim, especially when we host. So has anyone successfully persuaded a cat who is reluctant to ‘go’ outdoors?
There is an area of the garden I am prepared to give up to him and as we use wood pellets inside, could put these down for him.

Move the litter tray near the door and if that goes well, leave outside door and further away each few days. Some cats are really hard to get them to change where they do their business.

Thank you I will give it a go once we have some decent weather. Fingers crossed he will oblige.

I remember putting the litter tray outside when my cat was still a youngster and had reached that stage.

It seemed to work. He did in the end stop using the litter tray and just buried his business outside. He could come and go through his cat flap and all was fine for years.

I did bring the tray back indoors for him when he got old, creaky and less able to get himself in and out so easily. I do miss that old cat. 😥

I just put a raised bed behind the shed with compostable litter in it, poured the contents of a used tray into it and my cats soon got the gist.

Yes he’s had access to a tray for longer than we wanted as we had an older cat who would wee inside when it rained. He is 2 now so will just have to hope it isn’t too late.

Unfortunately cats make their own minds up. I had 2 who only ever went outside as long as I left one old and fossilised poo in the indoor litter to show it was theirs.

Have been very disappointed with the next two, who with exactly the same upbringing will make special trips home just to use the cat litter.

Hang on, are you actively trying to encourage your cat to go and shit in other people's gardens? Confused

I'm not sure you can - both of mine were indoors for longer than is perhaps usual due to location and now, despite a wonderfully long garden and plenty of beds for them to use, both still use the litter tray!

Mine is also awkward but I console myself that they're not pissing off my neighbours and I can keep an eye on their health as I scoop! I can't lie, I do love that they are basically house cats who play outside as it means I get lots of kitty love whenever I sit down! Here is my current situation 😻

Have you read my opening post where I say;

“ can usually be found in the house or the garden” I.e. doesn’t go in other peoples gardens

and

”There is an area of the garden I am prepared to give up to him and as we use wood pellets inside, could put these down for him.”

Mine does this too. But I don't mind as it means he's not pooping in the neighbours garden
