Cat's bum trim

No way to dress this up, does anyone have any advice please on how to better clip or use scissors to trim my long haired Dcat's backside?

He has been experiencing some GI issues (vet is involved) and it's making it harder for him to keep his bum clean. It's got much better but he has the occasional flare up.

He is very resistant to attempts so far, kicking, clamping his back legs and tail and I hate the thought of hurting him. There are 2 of us, one holding and reassuring and one clipping/ trimming but we haven't managed to do a proper job!

Went through this with my old beauty who was the prettiest lady you could imagine. It got worse as she got older.
There's no easy way I'm afraid. Clippers were a no no as her hair was too fine. It was just a case of manhandling her, one of us holding her tummy up and doing what we could with a good pair of scissors, and then turning her around over one of our shoulders and doing what we could from the back... Not a pleasant job, but she was worth it!

Get the vet or a professional groomer to do it. I had long haired Persians, and loose poo was not a good mix. I used to make sure their bums and trousers were very short!

I think the vet can do a sanitary shave, which I imagine is wholly undignified.

Either a groomer or the vet, or some very confident firm handling.

A gentle scruff hold and wrap quickly in a towel and hold firmly so they cannot get legs and claws out, and work quickly.

You could get a groomer.

Another way to clip hair away might be to start brushing him with a wide tooth comb. My long haired girl likes this. Under the chin, and all the heavenly places. I do her on a bar stool next to the kitchen island. I have a scissors handy on the island. As she is being tended to like the Queen of Sheba, I push the comb under any knots to cover her skin behind them. I can quickly cut the hair with the scissors knowing I won’t get her skin. You could reduce your boy’s trews bit by bit, if he took to it.

She jumps up on the stool herself for the pamper session. Little and often takes care of her knots. She is 7 and this is the first year we’ve got into this routine.

Of course, for something that needs immediate and drastic tending to, a two person job. One holds cat firmly (maybe a towel). Other person swiftly uses trimmer to shear backside area.

maybe a dreamie or treat of choice to make up.

Ask the vet to do a hygiene trim.

Sorry, I see he is very uncooperative, with the tail against his nethers. Could you shift it to one side, do the trimming/shaving, and then shift it to the other side?

Needanadultgapyear · 25/04/2024 19:09

Please use clippers not scissors. A couple of times a year I see cats who have had an area of skin snipped off whilst being tidied up with scissors.

Catunderling · 25/04/2024 19:15

Thanks for all the great advice everyone! I like the idea of distracting with grooming elsewhere but expect it may need to be a towel grab. It may have to be a vet job though for a full back end fade, I'm not sure he will become amenable but good to hear stories of it working one way or another for others. @Needanadultgapyear thanks, that sounds super painful for those poor cats, will definitely try clippers and if he's really not having it see.if we can get a groomer in the morning

I have several that have trims, I book with the vet nurse for a groom and tidy up, costs about £30.

I did this. To one of my late girls. I was absolutely in bits. She was fine though.
