Why didn't they give him his food?

Hello all, I have a 12 month old cat. He has grain free food and always has since I got him, If he has food with grains in it it makes him sick.

He went in a cattery for five days for the first time ever and I just got him back today. I took his usual food with me, Enough to cover the five days he was there.

Picked him up, got him home and opened the bag and ALL his food that I took was there, They hadn't given him any of it. I explained when I dropped him off I had brought his food because he needs a grain free diet or it will make him ill. The lady wrote down his food and how much I had brought etc so they knew about the grain free thing. Also it says on their website they can feed them the food they have there or we are free to bring their usual food if we want to.

Not sure what they have been feeding him and they are closed now until tomorrow so I can't ask, he has been being sick since I got him home a few hours ago.

Why would they not give him his food?

I don't know, other than neglect & laziness, why they wouldn't.

i hope he recovers quickly, poor baby.

That's definitely not normal OP - my cattery give my two their ridiculous mix of very specific food in their microchip activated feeders even though that's a lot more faff than normal bowls, and have done antibiotics and messaged me to let me know how giving each dose went. They do eat a lot less when they're in the cattery but I figure that's because they're not outdoors climbing fences etc.

Definitely query it with them, and maybe find a different cattery next time - but don't feel guilty, you sent him with the right food so it's not your fault!

I hope your fluffball is ok x

And this is why I would never use one, you can’t trust them. The poor sod has probably not been fed properly at all. God knows what else happened.

I’d be lodging a complaint, writing reviews everywhere you can and next time, use a decent per sitter in your own home with a camera. That’s what we always do.

Catteries are awful.

Smartiepants79 · 19/04/2024 21:59

No idea.
Very odd. All the catteries I’ve ever used have given them exactly what I’ve told them or provided.
Don’t use this one again.

Catteries are not awful.
Some catteries are awful.
Juts like some pet sitters are awful.
Bit like nursery’s and childminders. Some suits some people, some don’t.

I'd make sure to ask them and have a look around some others in your area for next time. We use a lovely one. I text the owner while I'm away as my cat is always a bit hissy with new people. He always replies and tells the truth, I know this as he has told me when he's been a pain. I also sent with lots of treats as my cat is very food motivated and he used these to bond.

Please look else where

Honestly, this is why I wouldn't trust a cattery. It's too easy to make mistakes when you're looking after 15-20 cats from different households who all have different requirements and whose food you have access to at all times.

At least with a sitter, they only have access to your cat's food and it's right there in the cupboard for them to use.

Our cattery was good until an ex vet nurse started as manager and the owner took a step back. She dieted my Bengal without my consent and I got back a very light unhappy miserable cat.

My dn uses a cat hotel who are real cat people and they come back happy.

I would be fuming if I handed back a poorly cat.

Toddlerteaplease · 20/04/2024 11:12

That's not good. My cattery would never do that.

hoarahloux · 20/04/2024 13:47

Not normal at all. I always send my cat's own food in along with treats and they let me know exactly what he's eaten. Don't use them again and let them know why!

I once put my 3 Burmese cats in a cattery for a couple of nights. I paid for 2 adjoining cages. When I collected the cats, they were in one cage together, my feeding instructions had not been followed, and the cats seemed traumatised. Never used a cattery again.
