Cat suddenly showing up.

We moved into our house in Sept 22. Previous owners has cats that went with them and last week one of them appeared at out door. Very familiar with house extra and then discovered he'd previously lived there. Never shown up before. Back again today. Owners moved about 2km away so not to far and not quite as far if you come across the fields which I suspect what kitty does. Owner is asking what can she do to stop him. I have no idea. I did tell her today that we wouldn't encourage him by feeding him or letting him in but what else can she do. I mean it's 19 months since we moved and now he shows up. I don't mind but what she do?

Kitty is still here. Doing their best to look all cute and get in. Owners know he's here but looks they aren't coming. I don't really want to feed him and encourage him to stay but am feeling guilty now

Have the owners said they want the kitty? If they didn't would you be up for adopting?
Does it have access to water and shelter (if you don't want to feed)?
Could you take it to a vet so they can contact the owners (assuming it's chipped)?

For his safety keep him in. He could get knocked down trying to get to the new house.. If they don't come collect him then congratulations on your new boss...

Scampuss · 16/04/2024 21:07

Unless you'd like to keep him (with his owners' consent obviously) just keep ignoring him.

They do want him. She came and collected him last week after I post on a community page as at that stage we didn't know who owned. She came and collected him and know he is back today but so far haven't showed up for him. I gave in and gave him a little food about 20 mins ago. He does have access to water here and plenty of shelter just not in the house. I would adopt him but they want him. I truly don't mind him being here but he is trying every approach to get in. He knows all the doors. 😂

Please don't feed him!

This isn't a stray or possible stray, he's clearly well loved, you really mustn't give in or do anything to encourage him at all. He will make his own way home when he's hungry.

ohthejoys21 · 16/04/2024 21:39

He's pining for his old home.. so sweet.. and sad! Sorry not helpful!

Hippomumma2 · 16/04/2024 21:42

Don’t feed him and he will go home when he is hungry. He has a loving home, so please be decent and don’t feed him or you are encouraging him to stay away from his family.

So, 4 months on and kitty still showing up at ours. Owner comes and collects (sometimes not til following day). A few weeks ago she asked if we wanted to keep him but I suspect she wasn't sincere as they were going away and didn't want to pay for him and their other cat to be bored. They ended up up having a farm worker look in on them. No sign of kitty during that time and lo and behold the day they came home he shows up at ours. Since then (approx 4 weeks) he's been here on a weekly basis. We agreed a few vivists ago we wouldn't feed him etc but he's been here on and off for 3 days now. I have text to say he's around but she's away at the mo and her hubby busy on the farm so no sign of them coming for him. He's currently asleep on my garden furniture under our veranda. I haven't fed him but it's breaking my heart and I really don't want to keep him. I'm not ready yet to replace my guy and when we do we want to rescue 2 together. I'm at a loss now with what to do.

He might’ve been locked in the house while they were away.

I think your keeping him though, he just likes that house and his owners aren’t collecting him promptly.

We would have collected ours if he’d gone 2km away and I would’ve cat proffer the garden to stop him doing it again.

Overtheatlantic · 29/08/2024 12:22

He really wants to move in with you. There must be something about his current set up that he doesn’t like and he’s trying to get himself a nicer set up.

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 29/08/2024 15:02

Or he really does not like the new house.

How he found the old house is a mystery though considering they can’t find chicken under their nose

SnakesAndArrows · 29/08/2024 15:11

He’s just visiting his old house. You don’t need to do anything really - he’ll go home if he’s hungry, surely?

I have a cat friend who visits me and comes inside given half the chance, but he’s clearly looked after so I just scoot him out and give him occasional cuddles. No food, despite the guilt tripping.

Mind you, I did let a stray move in once. Tiny chap, he thought he was a fierce lion, stole my heart and cost a fortune in vet bills. I still miss him 15 years on.

pinneddownbytabbies · 29/08/2024 15:18

The cat is clearly more attached to his old house and territory than he is to his owners, and would rather come back to live with you. That's basically it really.

He's made his decision, and now you need to make yours.

MollsDolls · 02/09/2024 23:42

Well Val is still here. We've christened him Val as his name is a Russian one and we don't know how to pronounce it 😂

No sign of anyone coming for him and we gave in a couple of days ago and fed him. He was crying with the hunger.

So I reckon he'll be a shared cat. 🙈

I would have fed him too, if they cared about him they’d be fetching him back every time. No way would I leave one of my cats like this they’re family.

Blackberriesandcobwebs · 03/09/2024 08:40

Maybe the previous owners have a new baby or new cat and he's voting with his feet/paws🐾? Anyway, it looks like you have a cat! Unless they keep him inside he'll keep doing it - they're stubborn.

Our old neighbours across the back emigrated to Oz and left their cat (or maybe she didn't want to be caught). Anyway, she decided to move in with us and she ruled the roost for 10 years!
