Keep finding ticks 😬

We are in rented accommodation at the moment whilst our house is being renovated, since August. Never had this before but in the last month, I keep finding live ticks on our white cat when she comes in. In the fur, not biting and I’ve been brushing her a lot with a flea comb to try to find them. I’ve probably taken 8 or so off her in last couple of weeks (I’ve just brushed two off her). I’ve been killing the ticks by squashing with the end of the comb. Grim.

It’s giving me the heeby jeebies to be honest. She has monthly prescribed flea treatment.

The garden here is quite established and mature, which is why I think she keeps getting them. Our other cat has black fur and I’ve not found any on her, but obviously a lot harder to spot but I am brushing them both religiously now.

Do I need to ask a vet for advice? It’s weird she keeps getting them as they’ve never had them before. Worried about them and us catching anything. Thanks

Does the treatment you use for fleas also repel ticks?

Needanadultgapyear · 14/04/2024 06:49

The vast majority of UK tick treatments for cats do not repel ticks, off the top of my head the only one which does is seresto collar. So if the cat is going somewhere with a high number of ticks just before in re-enters the house you will see them as they need to bite to be killed with the other products.

We live in the countryside and used to have this problem. Just ask your vet for flea treatment which also includes ticks. Job done.

Most standard flea stuff doesn't include ticks as you only need to treat for ticks at certain times of year.

Definitely get a flea/worm/tick treatment from the vets. Only thing that stops mine coming in with several a day for 9 months of the year. Not cheap but each application lasts 3 months.

The vet will give you tick treatment - you just need to ask for it as it's not covered by normal flea prevention in cats.

I wouldn't squash the ticks with the comb though - wrap them up in tissue first so the blood doesn't go everywhere.

My stronghold plus is against ticks as well as fleas and some worms

Think frontline plus also kills ticks

I think so - I’ve just checked and it’s nextguard combo. I’m going to ring vets tomorrow to ask. Thanks

Thanks all. We move back into our own house in a week, but I am going to ring the vets tomorrow and explain, ask about our prescription and what we can do.
Thanks all. Caught one on my arm yesterday 🤢. We haven’t found any that have attached yet thankfully.

The ticks would die if they bit the cat if you're using a product that protects against them

Yes but I don’t want the cats bringing them in. So far they’re not attached, just climbing in the fur.

We have Bravecto to be the most effective against ticks.

xSideshowAuntSallyx · 16/04/2024 21:35

I have this problem, they also get treated with Stronghold plus. I have had 4 so far this month, catch them before they attach as his fur is so thick. One was crawling on his face the other night.
