Applaws, Katkin or Scrumbles?

Can anyone say which one is best out of these? I’m looking for high quality wet and dry food that is easy on the tummy for fussy eaters with a dodgy belly.

My cat can’t tolerate supermarket commercial cat food. They all give him runny poo. I need something high quality, possibly grain free maybe? But he’s very fussy and seems to only want to eat dry food. The only wet food he will eat is if it’s in gravy. Does anyone know which would be best for this??

I get untamed. The gravy version is complete wetfood. They also do dry, I don't use this so not really looked at it. But my boy loves the wet fish flavours. They have also recently started doing a lick e lik type treat that has probiotics in

Oh, I thought it was going to be about choosing a name for a kitten........

Al991 · 11/04/2024 21:40

My cat had chronic colitis and IBD, shitting so much he starting pooing blood clots (terrifying). Was constantly ill and at one point we thought we’d lose him. Medications didn’t work. Switched to KatKin and he was cured instantly! Miraculous. I don’t work for them I swear haha.

Hahaha sorry! If it were about kitten names I’d definitely go for Scrumbles

Oh wow! That sounds scary, I’m glad he’s okay. Might go for it and purchase katkin then and just hope he approves

Ah thank you, I forgot about untamed. I might have to give them a try then if their wet food is in gravy because I know he’ll eat it (or at least lick the gravy off and leave the meat 😫)

We now avoid Applaws but only because although our two really enjoy it, it makes them sick if they eat too much of it - though, full disclaimer, they are exceedingly fussy and have extremely sensitive stomachs! They will only eat Royal Canin or PurrForm - and quite often turn up their noses at those...! 🙄

LakesideInn · 11/04/2024 22:07

I feed a mix of Katkin and Scrumbles.

Scrumbles v reliable, Katkin he loved then pulled that trick of hating it as soon as the new delivery of a month’s worth of food arrived. Stuck with Scrumbles then tried again with katkin and he went for 3 of the flavours but refused the chicken one. Still going strong with the duck, turkey and fish though and they have lots of choice of other recipes.

his litter tray doesn’t smell and his poo is pretty inoffensive - small hard bits. Totally different to when he was on Felix type food when it stank and was large and soft. Sorry if TMI!

You know he'd be renamed Scumbag once he gets to that awkward teenage period that lasts for the next fifteen to twenty years.

My two do like it, they also like Applaws and both are much better in terms of digestive health for the grain free fluffy one and general lack of stench from Mr I'd Be Fine With Felix You Know, But You're Giving Her the Good Stuff Anyway.

I'm a fan of Scrumbles since we got our rescue boy a few months ago. His poo stank to high heaven - gross!! Scrumbles has saved the day! It's not always totally stink-free but mostly, and it's more solid than it was when he came, which is a good thing for a long-haired cat who had to have his arse massively cleaned today however!!

Justanything86 · 11/04/2024 23:12

I feed mine a mix of dry scrumbles and feringa wet food I get from zooplus or bitiba. They LOVE the scrumbles and their litter tray doesn't stink.

This is also one of the problems we have as well. Because his poos are runny and he has long hair, the poo gets stuck to his fur around his bum 🤢😫

My cat loves katkin. She has allergies and a delicate tummy and she now looks so glossy and healthy.

SkankingWombat · 12/04/2024 08:18

Dry food-wise, I just get whichever of the grain-free high-meat-content brands are on offer. DCats aren't fussy about their biscuits thankfully. Currently they have Scrumbles.

Wet food is more of a faff...
13yo DCat1 came to us as an older kitten eating Whiskers wet food and Go-Cat biscuits. I'm not a fan of Whiskers, but she loves it 🤷🏼‍♀️ (and there's no denying it does keep costs down a little) The compromise was/is one wet Whiskers meal for breakfast, one high quality wet food for dinner, and high quality biscuits on the side. Thankfully her views on Go-Cat matched ours. The 'fancy' wet food = the ones that are made of shredded meat/fish. I rotate between Thrive, Encore, Untamed, Waitrose fancy stuff, and Sainsbury's fancy. Because she has the other foods, it doesn't matter if it isn't a complete food.
1yo DCat2 came to us as a 12 week old kitten full of stinky farts and poos. His stomach is much more delicate than Dcat1's and consuming anything Whisker-y is a highly unpleasant experience for the whole family... He gets high meat content wet food for breakfast. We buy larger tins from Zooplus to keep down the costs, but the brand varies depending on the offers. There has been one he didn't like, but otherwise isn't fussy. He currently has Rosie's Farm. His dinner and biscuits are the same as DCat1's. He still farts more than the other cat, but much less frequently and it no longer clears the room! His poos improved too. Occasionally the older cat leaves some of her breakfast, which the younger sneakily hoovers up - it is very obvious when this has happened! 🤢

I'd get a mixture if you do try them because I'm sure my friends cat also wouldn't eat the chicken flavours either.

MotherofOlive · 18/11/2025 15:40

Olive loved the Untamed trial food, and of course went off it as soon as we placed an order for 140 tins. She likes their dry food (chicken and rabbit). That's the real issue: dry food is what she's used to, having lived all her life in a household with a squeamish vegetarian. However, she now has an arthritis supplement that needs wet food to mix with, so she's had to adapt. And she has; it's half and half, and I won't lie, her fur is glossier and she's friskier (could be the supplements?). Meanwhile, our neighbours' new kitten has Katkins, so we have a couple of pouches to try. Smells good to me, the cat is still thinking about it and the vegetarian is clutching his pomander.

Popplebop · 18/11/2025 16:21

We have had Katkin for the last few years for the grouchy cat. He is not at all fussy and eats every single version with no hesitation. Litter tray is smell free and no instant regurgitation like he used to do with the cheaper cat food we sometimes had when he was younger. However its’s quite expensive and you need space in the freezer for the packs.

FourSeasonsTotalLandscaping · 18/11/2025 16:39

Thrive is very good quality - we feed their dry and Untamed wet in gravy - MiniCat doesn't like the jelly and also it isn't complete while the gravy is.

Good to know. :^) Having thought she was about to turn her nose up at it, I turned around to find a spotless dish. Cost is an issue, and the neighbours have inherited our big fridge, so freezer space is at a premium (especially as I keep coffee beans in ours). But if she really enjoys it, maybe we can figure this out: Untamed isn't exactly cheap. If Olive has dry food part of the time - e.g. when The Vegetarian feeds her - that might bring the Katkins outlay down a little, depending on their subscription structure. To be explored ...

PolarExpression · 19/11/2025 23:45

I buy Harringtons which is grain free and quite a bit cheaper than Thrive etc

Be good to know whether it's as good nutritionally, if anyone knows?

autumn1610 · 22/11/2025 00:21

Applaws isn’t complete cat food just supplementary which I only found out after feeding mine for a while. Mine is currently on one called Nood which is more mid range more meat content than others like Felix. He liked Katkin then stopped, untamed I couldn’t justify the cost and he was hit and miss, went onto Wild Freedom liked that for a few months and stopped (you get the picture 😂) I have a new raw food called nutriment that has been fairly successful grain free etc but also good value for money approx £5 for 500g for my cats weight he should be on 100g a day so it’s £1 effectively

Edited

Applaws dry food is complete, the wet food is complementary.

Mine are given the dry food for free grazing, and get a tin of wet every night as a treat. Their poos are fine and well-formed (big though, they’re Maine Coons!) and no smell.

In a zombie apocalypse, I’d consider eating a tin of the wet chicken food 😹

Toddlerteaplease · 23/11/2025 04:18

Penelope has Thrive. She loves it.

autumn1610 · 23/11/2025 07:39

@Ijwwm ahh fair enough I couldn’t get him to touch the dry food. For a cat that has just about been off the street for a year he’s very fussy 😂 the change to his poos after i sorted out his poor belly was crazy they used to wake me up they were that bad

Ijwwm · 23/11/2025 12:54

@autumn1610 - bless him, he’s landed on his paws finding a home with you. And it’s a cat’s job to be fussy!
