The litter tray

Diarrhoea in 5 month old kitten

So sorry if this is TMI!!

I have 2 kittens, both have had slightly loose stools for a few days (ironically since they went to the vet for their pre neuter check - they are due to have their op a week today), but today one of them has got "proper" diarrhoea as in very loose, more frequent etc.

He seems absolutely fine in himself, still eating and drinking fine, playing etc, but I'm wondering how long to let it go on for before I should speak to the vet?

They haven't had any new food, they are still indoor cats, not been anywhere other than the vet. The one who is worse is a bugger for jumping up onto the kitchen surfaces and drinking water out of the sink/shower tray, so I wonder if it's something like that that's upset his stomach?

Do I need to change what they are eating until it resolves, or just carry on as usual? They have a mix of wet and dry food.

Thanks!

Thank you. Have you used it with your pets before?

Yes. I actually gave my kitten some today because she's a tiny goblin and eats her big brother's food which gives her an upset tum!

This is the one my vet gave me. Same brand but advanced. Not sure difference to be honest. Try a bland diet for a few days, chicken, white fish for example. If not better in a few days I'd see vet.

I’ve never given them anything other than cat food to eat. He’ll probably think all his Christmases have come at once with a plate of chicken!

Could he have picked up worms? I know in dogs it can give them runny poop.

I would at least ring your vet for advice today. Hopefully it's nothing major, but cats and kittens can go downhill fast, so I'd want to check with the surgery today in case they want to see him.

Please take your kitten back to the vet. They can go downhill really quickly and it's likely he needs something more than ProKolin to treat him.

How is he now, @MissIndecisive2023 ?

Well the one who wasn’t well at the start of the week is now fine, but the other one started with D&V yesterday and I took him to the vet this morning. He has a high temperature so they gave an antibiotic injection and an anti sickness injection. He had to go back tomorrow morning for a temperature check - if still high then they want to keep him in potentially. They are meant to be being neutered on Tuesday so that quite possibly won’t happen now. Kitten2 (the one who is now ill) did seem quite unwell - not eating, glassy eyed, very much not himself but Kitten1 was ok in himself and symptoms did resolve by themselves thankfully.

Aw I'm sorry to hear that @MissIndecisive2023 especially about the other one! Hope once the antibiotics kick in he will feel much better.

Re: the first cat, I've been having difficulties with my 11 month old girl on and off - diarrhoea and haven't resolved it yet a month. She eats and drinks well at least.

We give pro kolin paste twice daily which helps. Have you tried the fortiflora probiotic powder as well, sprinkle on food and they love it? It could be an infection if they've both had problems.

@tortietimestwo sorry to hear you have had issues with your kitten - I’ll look into the probiotic powder, thanks.

The vet wondered if it was a bug - we did their flea treatment yesterday and wondered if kitten2 had been licking it off and that’s why he was sick, but vet didn’t seem to think that it would also cause a temperature so seems maybe was a bit of a red herring.

He seems to have perked up this evening - cooked him some chicken (he really is a lucky cat - I hate chicken and won’t even cook it for my children!) and he has been playing with his brother a bit this evening which is lovely to see.

My boy didn't even seem to notice! 😊 He was a bit dopy on the same day but was back to normal the next day.
