Is it installed the correct way around to prevent cats coming into your garden ?
I would've thought it should be put on the other way to stop cats jumping over the wall am I correct ?

I would suggest he has a house cat and it’s to stop his cat getting out of the garden. This is the way fencing is fitted when you make your garden a Catio for your cat. Maybe he has an FIV cat that can’t mix with other cats or you both live near a main road?

Shellingbynight · 06/04/2024 08:50

I've assumed you were standing outside the garden when you took the photo.

People install that type of fencing to keep their own cats in, and for that purpose the fencing needs to be angled inwards, towards his garden which is what he's done.

If he has installed it to keep cats out, he's done it the wrong way round, they can get in but not get out.

You couldn't use that style of fencing to keep cats out, because to do so the fencing would be encroaching on someonelse's airspace.

He doesn't have any cats this is why I was asking, I think he's a cat hater has bird feeders all over the garden, which is fine of course but seems weird to have the fencing that way !
Being vague but my cat isn't right just lately and convinced myself he's being poisoned or something mad !

In that case he's done it wrong and cats are likely to get trapped in his garden. He's either an idiot or he wants them to get trapped there.

This is what I'm thinking !

That's how ours is and it does keep cats out. We're surrounded by cats and the only one that ever got in did so because DH had left the gate open. The netting moves and the cats can't balance on it to get in.

I did think that originally. But surely if a cat was so inclined, like attracted by bird feeders in the garden they could just jump over the net once on the wall? Then they wouldn't be able to get out

Wrong . My friend had something similar but more fixed looking to keep her cat in , it got out easily enough twice and on both occasions couldn’t get back in so she took it down .

SoupDragon · 06/04/2024 12:25

Surely it can't be put on the other way round as it would hang outside his property?

Yes exactly. It is intended to be installed as he has done with the overhang in his own garden, but it is intended to keep cats in, not out. Someone put up a link earlier

TidalShore · 06/04/2024 12:31

It's not 100% but it will significantly cut down the number of cats wandering through his garden, so that might be enough for him. He can't do it the other way round anyway as it would be hanging outside his boundary. Once one goes in and gets stuck it's unlikely to try going in again.

I've cat proofing to keep my cat in (not netting though) and I've only ever had 2 cats get in - who I had to let out the gate - and neither have ever been back. Before cats would be wandering through pretty much daily.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 06/04/2024 12:33

I don't know about walls but no cat has managed to jump over the netting on our fence. We left it up when Harry died as we wanted to keep the neighbouring cats out.

astridforty · 06/04/2024 12:35

We have this exact fencing as linked by pp. It’s been 100% effective so far (3 years ish) in keeping our cat in and the neighbouring cats out. We’ve had the odd standoff when a neighbour cat sits on the top of the wooden fence but they’ve never worked out how to clear the net and jump into the garden - would be a substantial leap.

CwmYoy · 06/04/2024 12:40

Ours is like that - installed by previous owner. It keeps cats out - never seen one in the garden.

fieldsofbutterflies · 06/04/2024 15:22

It's supposed to work both ways - to keep your cats in your garden, and to prevent other cats from entering. He also wouldn't be able to install it the other way round because it can't overhang on someone else's property.

rockstarshoes · 07/04/2024 19:07

Ours is to keep our 2 cats in but it works at keeping other cats out!

There is one local cat that comes to sit on the fence & laugh at them but he's never made it in!
