Cat flap/ chip problem

My new boy Ernie was chipped recently and was hoping to use existing flap, he is an only cat. At the vets I was holding him, but he is very strong and jumped as the chip was put in. Result is chip is at the side of his neck, the reader on the chip is at the top, so won’t read his chip even for the flap to learn his chip.
Thought I could take the batteries out and use as a manual flap, however only lets him out and not back in. It is SURE FLAP, vet says we cannot put another chip in. Chip is showing up when vet scans, just out of place.

Any wise cat slave had this issue please?

Can you tape down the wee bit that pops up to lock the cat flap?

CormorantStrikesBack · 05/04/2024 14:40

You can have two chips in, one of my cats has two chips become I forgot I’d had it done and did it again. Alternatively put a normal flap in and sell the chip flap.

A different brand might have a broader range to read the chip, but failing that, it's easy to switch out for a manual flap (or just tape over the catch on the one you have!).

Scampuss · 05/04/2024 14:43

It does seem odd it won't read it as the flaps will open with a collar tag which would be under the chin.

Have you tried putting new batteries in the flap?

A quick Google suggests that there is no reason to not have two chips and that you can register that it's a duplicate. So I would push your vet or ask another.

And interesting the Sureflap never worked for my cat even with a chip in the correct place. The flap worked because I bought a chip and when I went to the flap with the chip in my hand it worked fine. The vet scanned the cat and the chip was in the right place (this was not the two chip cat) but when I shoved the cat at the catflap the flap never clicked. Sureflap sent me a new flap and that didn’t work either

Thanks for the ideas, have a few options to try now. I am not very technical, but your ideas make sense. Play worked for years with last cat and was great.
Ideal if you want to nip out and know he can get back safely.

There's no reason why he can't have two chips, but maybe the vet wants to wait a while before doing the second?

I’ve had two cats with two chips to allow them into catflap. I’d find someone else to put in another chip - but also remember to cross reference the chips serial number on each entry on the database they relate to (and obviously update both if you move/have a new phone number).

As a temporary measure, you may have or be able to buy an rfid tag for their collar.

My cats only had to stand near the cat flap for it to read their chips.
I got sick of constantly changing the batteries so taped the clips down. The magnetic seal keeps it from flapping and hopefully strong enough to keep vermin out!

I couldn't work out why I was getting through so many batteries until I realised my two sat on the front doorstep so were constantly triggering it!

I have a Sureflap, and if I take the batteries out it works as a manual flap, no chip needed.

Take the batteries out, then click the Memory button and the tab will click up to put it in 'learn mode'. Leave batteries out, put the battery cover back on, it works as a manual cat flap.

I do this for a week every time I get a new cat as the 'click' startles them, so I get them used to going through it initially as a normal non-clicking flap.

My cat flap didn't work for my old boy either. We had to tape down the pop up bit to stop it locking him out

Shellingbynight · 06/04/2024 10:24

Ignore my previous message, I got the method the wrong way round (I just went to check).

Take battery cover off. Click the M button and the tab will go down. Remove batteries. Replace battery cover.

The tab stays down and you now have a manual cat flap which will swing back and forth and let your cat in and out regardless of chip.
