Cats suddenly ate loads

So we are looking after our next door neighbours two young cats and have been doing so since Monday. Under instructions, we go in once a day in the late afternoon and top up dry food, put out a pouch of wet food between the two, top up water and check the litter trays. The cats go outside and have one of those microchipped cat flaps and are locked in overnight after a certain time.

Now the issue: today we went in and all the dry food had gone. Two quite full bowls. Most of the water was drunk too. The cats came racing inside when they realised we were there and were meowing loudly and trying to get their heads in the pouches of wet food while we were dispensing them. The cats looked fine otherwise. They usually eat the wet and basically nibble a small amount of dry food. Plus the litter trays had a good few poos in. Again usually they don't use them as they can go outside all day. But previously, when we've looked after them, they've had the odd dump in the trays.

So they ate waaaay more than usual and looked extremely hungry and desperate for food.

Is this normal? I'm a dog owner and have limited cat experience. I don't want to text the neighbours as they are abroad and I don't want to unduly worry them.

Thoughts from people who have cats as overlords please?

Am thinking another cat followed them through the cat flap. Mine has been followed in when he has pelted through the flap with another in hot pursuit. His litter is outside during the day in a covered car port and we are sure the other cat uses it sometimes.

All I can think of is that one visit a day and half a pouch of wet food per cat doesn't seem like anywhere near enough, but you say that's what they've always had so I'm honestly not sure!

Ask the neighbours if they usually get more food than that.

I'd guess an interloper too. If there's a hungry stray around it will eat everything it can find.

Yes I did wonder if an interloper came in and finished everything off! I guess it can happen even with the new fangled microchip flap thingys. How funny. It may have been locked in all day.

I also agree I don't think one pouch between two sounds much but there was loads and loads of dry food out so usually the cats shouldn't be starved.

Think I'll pop over this morning to see if all is ok.

Please also contact the neighbours and tell them what's happened.

If my cats massively changed their behaviour I'd want to know about it.

@fieldsofbutterflies ok I will do that too.

Absolutely this. We have catsitters whenever we go on holiday (who stay in the house) and I would absolutely want to know about this. Maybe they accidentally told you the wrong quantity? Maybe an interloper has come in before and they know who it was? Or maybe they should be checking the cats‘ thyroid levels once they return. It would be more worrying if the cats weren’t eating anything at all though.
