Your thoughts on foods allegedly suitable for both cats and dogs?

Hi all,

Cat has to put on weight following illness and vet has told me to use recovery foods.

There is a Hill Prescription "on care" recovery food labelled as suitable for cats (no mention of dogs). And another Hills one and also a few Royal Canin options but all of these are allegedly suitable for both cats AND dogs? These are much cheaper though.

Any thoughts on whether the cheaper option, for both cats and dogs would be ok?

Thanks

The big issue would be making sure it was a complete food for the cat. Dogs are omnivores but cats cannot make taurine so rely on getting it from meat protein. Diets deficient in taurine for cats can cause cause cats to go blind.
So dogs can eat cat food but cats should not just eat dog food.

Of course both tend to be more interested in whatever you are eating anyway!

The late Magic had some royal canin 'recovery milk' when she had pancreatitis. I was surprised it was suitable for cats and dogs. But she was ok with it and didn't need it for long, as she started eating when I stopped tube feeding. She's have been extremely offended if I'd told her it was suitable for dogs as well. Cats obviously being the superior beings.
