Can't deal with cat constantly pooing indoors

We have a rescue cat, thought to be approx 14 years old.
He was a stray so always a law unto himself but in the last year he has started pooing everywhere in the house. He must be spraying as well, can smell it but not as obvious to spot. He has access to litter trays but doesn't use them.

I can't carry on like this, the house stinks and it makes me feel feel physically sick. He is very skinny and the vet says he's hyperthyroid but no other conditions aside from old age.

My teens think it's cruel to consider euthanising but frankly as they don't do any of the clearing up I'm not inclined to be swayed by them.

I'd consult the vet as a first step but if it is just age/no cure then putting to sleep is a valid choice. When we got our rescue cats they spent a week or so weeing and spraying around the house. We used Feliway and eventually they stopped but I suspect that's not your cat's problem.

Years ago when my children were young I had a 13 year old cat that did this too. She knew she was going to the loo and would swat on the carpets. She also went outside. The vet tested for infections etc but they were negative. Vet said it was old age/dementia and asked if I could keep her confined to one room. The children were only small then so no way would they have been able to remember this. It was also unfair on the cat to be in isolation. I decided to have her put to sleep, she had had a good life but her time had come I felt.

Get a vetcheck, cats don't normally like to poo everywhere. Could it be he is in pain and ýcant get in and out the tray, would a shallow one be easier..

Just to add I had had this cat from a kitten and nothing else had changed to make her anxious

He has a variety!! Makes no difference

We suspect he was hit by something before we had him as he is very stiff which might make him less inclined to go outside or walk to a litter tray.
I'm not sure putting him on regular meds at this age would make much difference though - it's a difficult call to make but can't let the pooing situation continue Sad

If he’s stiff / in pain then I would have thought painkillers would be an option before euthanasia? We had an elderly cat and she had kitty iburprofen in her food for her last 6 months.
