When do you decide it's time ?

I've a 13.5 year old lap cat who about 2 months ago started with horrific bowel leakage - we thought we'd cracked it as we found her thyroid is over active but 6 weeks on (and thyroid stabile) she's still as bad. They've done bloods and ultrasound (which showed spots on kidney / liver and inflamed intestine) The vets suggested an hypoallergenic diet to see if that settled it - it hasn't at all other than piss her off big style. I'm awaken every night to her putting it in her mouth and spitting it out. She absolutely hates it. She hates me dabbing her bum but she's just dribbling out all the time. I keep washing her bedding, if she sits on your knee you need to wash the clothes. She's constantly cleaning herself - She's still purring. I'm a great believer (after leaving our last dog far too long) in the better earlier than later camp until it's your baby !

I think you're there to be honest Flowers

I decided for my boy when he kept having constant uti issues and the vet said they couldn't guarantee the treatment would work any more. I didn't want it to end up as an emergency in the middle of the night. He was still lively, purring, eating etc but it was just time, possibly a little early
I've never regretted it, he went cuddled in my arms having not been in pain or discomfort. To me it was the equivalent of saying goodbye to someone at 90 instead of 95

Should probably add that sounds really harsh but when I took him to the vet she said it wasn't a bad decision, most people leave it too late and she thought I was being very sensible
And I loved him more than anything and howled for days but I got comfort in that he went before he suffered if that makes sense

I agree with a PP who said it sounds like it's time.

I tried steroids with my girl when she had inflamed intestines. But she went down hill very quickly. It sure if it was the underlying condition. Or the steroids. But I knew we were just buying time. And it wasn't fair. It was really really sad. And I still miss her terribly, but it was the right thing for her.
