Unplanned cat

A few weeks ago we noticed a fluffy cat loitering by the door at work. Very friendly, asking for a fuss, following people to their cars. Still there the next day and the next. We got worried that she didn't seem to be leaving at all, so we put a paper collar on her with our phone number, and posted photos on the neighbourhood Facebook pages and lost cat groups. We found someone with a scanner and found she had no chip. By last Monday we hadn't heard anything, everyone was stressing about the cat sleeping outdoors in the rain at night and it kept darting into the building whenever a door opened.

So, I bit the bullet, asked my landlord's permission and brought her home. She sat under the table briefly but within 3 minutes she was on my daughter's lap. She pretty much stayed attached to her for the next 10 hours, purring and making biscuits.

Although she (I think) is fluffy, underneath the fur there's nothing to her. I can feel her ribs, her spine and the bones in her tail. Her frame is small, so maybe not very old. But her belly is round...

So now I'm waiting for a vet appointment on Monday to estimate her age so I can get insurance and sort tagging and vaccines and find out whether she has any passengers on board...

In the meantime it's very difficult to get anything done with her sitting there looking like this.

So beautiful. You’ve been blessed 😻

vipersnest1 · 23/03/2024 20:08

This is my unplanned cat. My DD1 took him in and he was a rather ragged un-neutered stray. She couldn't keep him as she already has enough cats, so I got volunteered as the new owner!
He's been with me just under a year and thinks he's my overlord. 😁

Oh what a beauty. I am jealous. A fluffy and friendly black cat is my dream. No disrespect to my brown and grumpy lovely boy 🙂

I don't understand this part of your post. There is no such thing as enough cats!

vipersnest1 · 23/03/2024 21:53

Haha, @Usernamesarenoteasy - I'd had a bet with myself that someone would say this somewhere along the line! Smile

Forhecksake · 25/03/2024 14:34

It turns out that kitty is definitely an unspayed girl, 6-8 months old...

Not sure yet whether there are buns in her oven or if she'll burst into season at any moment. But she's chipped and vaccinated and insured now and hopefully she'll forgive me for putting her in the carrier again.

Cats forgive very easily and box is a necessary evil in a life of leisure and pampering.

Floralnomad · 25/03/2024 17:16

She is gorgeous @Forhecksake

tortiecat · 25/03/2024 17:26

What a beautiful girl OP. She is lucky to have found you and your DD.

TiredCatLady · 25/03/2024 17:36

Placemarking for potential kitty buns. She’s gorgeous.

Awwww kitty buns.

Easter kitty buns!

Whiskeypowers · 25/03/2024 17:50

She is an absolutely stunning cat! Well done on taking her in and on 🐾

Allergictoironing · 25/03/2024 18:23

Depending on how far she's gone, most vets will neuter a pregnant cat - obviously not if she's due to drop any day, but if they aren't far along it's not uncommon. Cats aren't like humans in that they don't miss having the kittens in these circs.

And yes, she's VERY beautiful!

Ellmau · 25/03/2024 19:22

She's gorgeous. Her fur looks in good condition.

And yes, I think it could be a case of unplanned CATS.

Forhecksake · 29/03/2024 23:22

Well, she's not showing any sign of going into season, and it's been weeks since we first spotted her at work. 😬

A vet should be able to tell you if she's pregnant or not. If not get her spayed. If she's so friendly and loving it would be likely she used to be a pet and either ran away/got lost or got dumped. She looks gorgeous 😻😻. Cats make such good pets.

Overtheatlantic · 30/03/2024 07:16

Does she have a follow up vet appointment? She’s stunning!

Forhecksake · 30/03/2024 11:25

The vet could feel her uterine horns enough to know that it's still there. But she couldn't tell whether she was pregnant or had given birth recently. Her advice was to book a spay appointment for 2 weeks to hopefully avoid the opportunity to go into season or let a pregnancy progress too far. But the earliest available appointment was over 3 weeks away...

By then I think it will be obvious whether she's expecting. If she is then I don't know what's the best and safest course of action. I hope the vets will be able to advise.

My cats mama has a similar story;my cat was one of the kitty buns;unfortunately two of the five kitty buns didn't make it;they were all very small.

Anyway my DD and the owners DS were good friends and he asked her if she wanted one of the kittens as he knew she already has a cat who's treated like a king and figured we've provide a good home.

My husband was very anti getting another cat especially a kitten again.

2.5 years on and my husband comes home from work and it's "where's my princess, there she is,daddy's home princess, come get a cuddle" 😂😂😂

heldinadream · 30/03/2024 15:33

Is she still Binx? She looks quite the character. And very pleased to be with you. 😍

LadyBird1973 · 30/03/2024 16:05

I'm shamelessly place marking to see if you get kittens

Forhecksake · 04/04/2024 21:04

Well I am definitely in the dog house now.

I changed Binx litter tray to one with a cover to hopefully stop so much litter being kicked out of the tray. Well. Clearly this was an egregious offence, as a covered tray is not entirely unlike the BOX OF DOOM which takes her to the vet.

I also briefly cracked open the window to air the room, forcing her to take refuge behind the sofa, not having realised that outdoors is TRYING TO GET HER.

I also went to the fridge without getting her any chicken, which is the sole purpose of said fridge.

She appreciates your thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.

Oh dear, that poor mistreated cat. You'll be reported to the RSPCA next.
