The litter tray

Cat has Taken Against his litter

Had my cat for about a year- adult rescue now a house cat as he's partially blind.
He had a dodgy stomach til Christmas but that's finally got sorted. I don't know if he was a bit dehydrated due to his diarrhoea, but he used to use his litter tray fine.

Now, he's become very fussy. We use wood pellets so they can biodegrade and he has 2 trays. He's happy to poo on one, but he doesn't seem to like weeing on the other, unless it's a very thin layer, and then he gets his paws wet and treads it around. If it's wet at all he won't use it again and wees on the floor next to it. If it's too deep he won't use it.

I've bought some katkin clumping stuff but he won't touch it. He currently has a selection of trays with various amounts of wood peelet/katkin on its own and mixed and he left a huge puddle on the floor.

Help!! The skirting board is getting saturated!

Aww bless his little face. Has he got a UTI my cat does this when he’s had an infection.

I would get him checked at the vet - peeing outside the litter tray is one of the first signs of a UTI or pain.

How about trying the silica gel stuff for litter? Normally our cats go outside but a new kitten means using litter trays for time being. No wet paws. Its been very good (as has kitten and older cats).

That is a seriously cute face. I would also get him checked by a vet. UTIs can flare up so quickly.

If it turns out that he has simply taken against his litter, could you put newspaper under and around the tray to soak up puddles while you’re experimenting with new litters?

Have you taken him to the vet?

I haven't tried it yet but I had a Facebook ad for a coconut husk based litter that's biodegradable and extra soft underfoot. It's called Huskaloo. Might be worth a try.

Thanks everyone!

I thought we'd cracked it as he did wee in the 'combination' tray last night, but this morning there was a neat puddle in the very centre of his 3 trays.

I don't think he has a UTI, as he will wee in the litter if it is exactly to his liking. He's absolutely fine in every other way.

I'll give the Kitcat a week, and if he won't use it I'll try the huskaloo.

We have tried some litter which is made of puffed up maize pellets - worked so far - it's called Maizy. Clumps really well. Feels fairly soft.
