How do you recognise good quality wet cat food?

Hi, just as the title says really. My two cats (approx 7 years old) have Felix as good as it gets. Happy to pay more for a higher quality food, but how do I recognise this from ingredients? One cat has a sensitive stomach and vomits/loses weight easily. Other cat puts weight on easily. Would prefer to feed same food, albeit separately. Any easy pointers appreciated. Thank you!

Start with the meat content. You should be looking for a grain free food without carb fillers. Any good independent pet shop should be able to guide you too.

There are quite a few articles online. I did a lot of research on quality and cost as I was keen to use wet food. Male cat so have to be careful about future bladder issues.
I have ended up using Meowing Heads pouches with small supplements of scrumbles dry food.

Be prepared though. The Felix and other supermarket main brands are dirt cheap compared with quality high meat content pouches. I pay just over £1 a pouch for the Meowing Heads.

Oh and make sure the food is labelled as ‘complete’.

I buy a few brands from ZooPlus, they deliver very quickly and reliably.

Thank you for the quick responses - I am tempted to buy 10 pouches of the meowing heads to see if they go down well!

Yeah I was going to say high protein content too. As little 'filler' like grain as possible 😊

Clarice99 · 18/03/2024 09:15

Higher quality = grain free.

Cats are obligate carnivores, and they do not get nutrients from fillers (grains). As PP mentioned, look for 'complete' food.

A cheaper alternative to Zooplus for online cat shopping is Bitiba.

Feeding higher quality grain free food helps with weight control and cats are sustained for longer. Pretty much like humans really. When we eat protein, we're 'fuller for longer', but if we eat a bag of crisps, we're 'hungry' very quickly.

It's a shame that Meowing Heads only do dry, @Orangeandnavy. Our vet is very pro wet food to help prevent kidney issues later, and having had a cat with end stage kidney disease, I tend to agree.

Meowing heads do wet cat food as well as dry.

Thank you everyone - my cats are both male so I like them having wet food supplemented by a few biscuits - I have ordered some of the variety packs of wet food - cheapest provider seems to be direct from barkingheads.co.uk

I will update on what the cats think of their improved diet :-)

Thank you, @Clarice99!

It doesn't matter so much about the wet food being complete if they are having a complete dry food. My 2 have thrive dry and vets kitchen dry food which are both complete and then a mix of wet foods. Some wet foods I give are grain free and some aren't. Some of them are complete and some aren't e.g. I think applaws is grain free but complementary rather than complete.
