Cat is 12 and we've never had insurance. Any suggestions please? But want something that covers everything

It won’t be cheap for a 12 year old cat, but Petplan is pretty comprehensive and covers dental costs, which most don’t.

it Won’t cover pre-existing conditions which are pretty broad in definition I’m not sure it would make sense for such an old cat

We have Waggel and they are really good.

We've had many cats and a couple of dogs over the years. They have all been with Petplan and I've always been pleased with them. They've always paid quickly and never quibbled despite some bills running in to several thousands of pounds.
Most companies will say they don't cover pre-existing conditions though & if it's an older cat they might ask for your vet records to check what conditions the cat has had previously.
Also, contrary to a previous poster, our plan doesn't include dental. Maybe it's now an option but it wasn't when we took it out and it seems common for that not to be covered.

I also have Tesco. I recently took out new ongoing insurance for a cat aged 8. I have to pay an excess and also 20% of any charges.

They do cover dental subject to certain conditions. The cat had to have an initial dental exam and I had to pay for any work needed (£600 worth!). Going forward if he has a dental exam every 12 months they will cover any dental work needed.

You're very unlikely to be able to take out a new policy on a 12 year old cat that's of much use, unfortunately.

They won't cover anything you've ever seen the vet for, your premiums will be high and you'll have to pay at least 20% of any claims plus your agreed excess for each claim/condition per year.

Personally, I would just put money aside each month and have an idea in your head about what conditions you would treat and which ones you wouldn't.

Tesco is really good
