Cattery , am I doing the right thing?

Hi,
I have two siamese cats which are very bonded to each other but completely different personalities ; one chilled the other one terrified of his own shadow and will only let me stroke him.
I'm thinking cattery because I'm going to Australia for three weeks to visit my sister over Christmas. Normally when we go for a week's holiday I ask my local friend or neighbour to feed the cats/ do litter but I feel three weeks is too long to do this.
I'm also affected by the fact last time we were in Australia (5 years ago) one of the cats went missing for a day and it was horrific. I've looked again house sitters but if anything happened I wouldn't be able to get home quickly.
So I wanted to ask what's peoples experience of catteries. I realise it will be costly but thought I could put away money each month. What I'm more concerned about is will this traumatise the cats? I've found and nice looking one and asked to visit but worried they will be cold and if the cats will hate me when I get back! They are very much pampered cats! Any thoughts appreciated.

Cattery , am I doing the right thing?

Trusted Housesitters is fab- someone (vetted and with references from other pet owners) will come and stay in your house for free, and look after your kitties x
I donl;t work for them, btw, but have used them in the past!!

LovelaceBiggWither · 11/03/2024 08:54

I'd ask around for a good cattery. It's always felt safer to have the cats in a cattery to me. Our last two episodes of catsitting went badly--one the cat sitter pulled out the night before we were supposed to fly and the other one the catsitter managed to lock the cats in the house and herself outside.

Octavia64 · 11/03/2024 08:57

I have had a lot of cats over the years.

Most are slightly grumpy at me when I get back about the cattery but get over it within 24 hours. One had ibs and struggled with the change in cat food.

Marilala · 11/03/2024 09:01

I used to put my cat into a cattery but then we got a kitten and I didn't want to disrupt her routine after just moving into our house.
i had always been soooo nervous about letting strangers into my house but the well being for the cats ended up taking precedent and I've never looked back! I used pawshake and read all the reviews and met the cat sitter before agreeing to the booking. The cats are so much happier being at home in their own environment and I stick ring cameras in all of the rooms for peace of mind. Also nice as I can check in on the cats on the cameras.

If you're worried about the cat escaping can you close off the cat flap?

Toddlerteaplease · 11/03/2024 09:23

My two go to a really good cattery. The pens are huge and there are ducks, chickens and horses for them to look at. The staff are brilliant with them.

Caspianberg · 11/03/2024 09:35

We always use trusted house sitters. No issues.

I much prefer it. Our cat can stay in routine, our house is watched over also so if there was a leak or roof tile flew off in storm etc someone can let you know. Ours update us every other day with pictures. Trusted house sitters also included a 24/7 online vet option so they can call anytime if issue overnight, and they have local vet details for anything.

It’s really good value also at around £100 for annual membership. So it would only cost you membership and cost of utilities for 3 weeks for both cats. And can use again within year

ComputerInitiateJump · 11/03/2024 09:53

We use a cattery as our cat needs a lot of time and attention. It's expensive but worth it for peace of mind that she won't go missing while we're a long way away.

The 'pens' are lovely with different levels in an outside area that over looks the garden, then a separate private 'sleeping' area through a cat flap with a heated bed. The owners adore the cats and give them loads of attention and send us photos and updates.

fleurneige · 11/03/2024 09:56

Cattery seems to be the best option- but make sure you do a couple of trials first. With every new animal we adopt, we always make sure they spend a few days at kennels/cattery every few months, so we can check the conditions in real terms, and the animals are not so spooked when they have to go. We do this in case we ever have to leave in an emergency.

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 11/03/2024 10:00

Our cattery is expensive but there’s horses and peacocks to watch and dogs to sneer at as they pass by.

They have little heaters for night and you can take a bed in for each of them.

I took a scratch post once but when I got there they’d upgraded each pen to a 4ft tall tree with branches and beds and hammocks so I left it in the car. I would r leave a cat like a Siamese for 3 weeks they aren’t like other cats at all they’ll go off looking for you when their bonded.

ShennyInfinity · 11/03/2024 10:04

I always use catteries, I know they'll be safe. Have a look at catteries in your area and look at the reviews, also visit the cattery beforehand. Your cats are beautiful Siamese, I wouldn't trust a house sitter and they'll be spooked with a strange person living in the house while you're not there, especially your nervous one. Mine are in a huff for a couple of hours but soon get over it.

LilacpointMummy · 11/03/2024 10:14

I'm another fan of Trusted Housesitters - my Siamese cats would never speak to me again if I put them in a cattery!
We have had good experiences with all our Housesitters and ours are v high maintenance - like most Siamese 😻

Theraffarian · 11/03/2024 10:45

I was always rather anti cattery , until our present cat . He does not like people coming into the house , so a daily invasion of his safe zone would absolutely stress him to the max . Instead we did a couple of short breaks and tried out two catteries.

The first was the better looking one , on paper had everything he could possibly need , but they didn’t follow our request while he was with them . Cattery 2 is further away , more “rustic” but the staff are brilliant . He’s taken a shine to one in particular, which is pretty unheard of , and although he’s always more than happy to come home , I feel they are looking after him well . He also has anti anxiety medication from the vets , and we trust them to make a daily decision as to whether he needs it while he is there .

They provide standard food , cat litter etc , but we actually take all his own so he has what he is used to . They have beds , heat lamps, blankets, cat towers etc , but again we take his own bits so he can settle with familiar smells .

In the past we have had cats that didn’t have any problems with people popping in to feed them , or staying with family members, however this one would literally hide away , so at least in a cattery they see him every day and make sure everything is ok .

YoureWinningAtLife · 11/03/2024 10:48

I have a cat that is terrified of her own shadow. She has been in a cattery once -never again!

She was so traumatised she actually lost her voice for several days because she was yowling so much. When I picked her up she was just backed into a corner yowling away. 😢

My previous boy had always been fine there so I didn’t ever think it would be an issue.

Snowwhite83 · 11/03/2024 11:54

Hello,

Thank you so much for all these replies, it's been incredibly useful!
I think I will do a trial at a cattery to see how my scared cat reacts and look at alternative options if needed.

We use cattery. Our boy is mainly indoors so not so confident around people he doesn't know. I text the owner one day 1 of our holiday. He was still grumpy and hissing. I text a couple of days later and was told he's totally different, and very happy. When he came home he sat on my knee which he never does. We made sure someone was home for a few days all the time to make sure he settled back home

erikbloodaxe · 11/03/2024 17:28

I have 3 in a cattery at the moment. 1 Siamese, 1 Oriental, I Mog. They will be there for about 3 months in total.

It is a brilliant cattery. The owner has over 30 years experience with cats. He understands them and gives all the cats individual attention based on their needs. He's experienced more Siamese/Orientals than most people here will ever do. Far more experience than a pet/house sitter.

He WhatsApps me every night with an update. They've settled very well given 2 are very high needs.

Very expensive but worth it to me.

fleurneige · 11/03/2024 17:30

3 months, oh poor things. Do you do this on regular basis?

Ilovemyshed · 11/03/2024 17:34

A good cattery is fine. I would suggest you find one which is cats only (not kennels as well), that lets you drop in for a chat, and where you can have them together in a large double pen. Provide your own food if they are picky.

Also, trial them for a few days soon, and again a couple of times running up to your trip so they can learn to acclimatise and know you come back and pick them up.

erikbloodaxe · 11/03/2024 17:43

@fleurneige What? Why would you assume that.

My house purchase fell through which left me homeless.

So no actually I don't do this on a regular basis, they have never even been left overnight before. Jesus Angry

AnnaMagnani · 11/03/2024 17:45

Cattery! My scaredycat is far worse at home without us than she is in cattery.

At home she gets stressed, goes missing and poos round the house.

At cattery she hides under a blanket and eats her bodyweight in kibble every day. We are forgiven within a couple of hours but she always needs a diet.

stayathomer · 11/03/2024 17:46

We are doing a cattery this year too. Every time we’ve been away the cats have gone missing for a time. Our neighbours said before they’d never use one, that it’s awful but to be honest our cat is a sleepy house cat anyway and I’d rather her be locked in a comfy little room with a scratching post than she got killed running away

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 11/03/2024 17:57

My cat has always seemed unsettled after the cattery. She used to miaow like mad on the way, dropping her and picking her up. Last time I collected her they lost her beloved toy. I know it's not a big deal on its own but it just made me think she'd much prefer being at home and having someone drop in so now we have a pet sitter who comes every other day when we go away and she seems much happier

Love our cattery! They have chickens and ducks and a pond
for them to watch over. The owners are CLEARLY cat people, when we pick them up they always have plenty to say about what they have been up to so I know they spend time with them.

I have housecats with FIV so I need them to be closely supervised in case any vet trips required- one housesitter visit a day would not be enough, especially as one of mine just runs and hides from visitors. I feel they are much more closely supervised in the cattery and also that it is safer for them- one of mine is an escape artist and I wouldn’t trust a housesitter to be as vigilant as we are with him!

SevenSeasOfRhye · 11/03/2024 18:11

Mine hate it, but it's great to see how happy they are when they come home again and they don't seem to bear a grudge.
