New carpets resistant to cat stratching

Just coming to the end of our renovation and need carpets for upstairs and stairs.

We love the sisal weave and Berber loop but are these an absolute no no with cats? Has anyone had carpets which has been more durable against stretching scratching cats? I really want a more contemporary style.

Thanks

I've never known any kind of carpet be resistant to cat scratching unfortunately. Ours scratch less now they're older but there's still a big threadbare patch in the living room that we've had to cover with a rug, lol.

5 cats here and I've tried most carpets, all equally attractive to claws.

sheeplikessleep · 06/03/2024 17:32

Thanks both, was worried that would be the answer! The carpet before we renovated was quite resistant to scratching, but they were quite tightly weaved and small loops.

Im less keen on the softer deeper carpet and really like this sisal loop but they’re bigger loops.

@sheeplikessleep
Do you have a scratching post?
Our cats seem to pluck any carpets if they get the chance. They have wrecked the stair carpet but we keep them out of the bedrooms.
I'm not sure there is such a thing as a cat proof carpet. We are going to paint our stairs with slip proof paint and add some grips to the treads.

We have loop carpets and our boys do not scratch them! They get stuck in them a bit at first and they don’t like it so they quickly learn to retract claws on the carpets! My house is however, littered with cardboard boxes as their preferred scratching sites!

lifebeginsaftercoffee · 06/03/2024 18:23

I genuinely think it's cat dependent. We've had four cats in this house and only two have liked attacking the carpets - the others prefer vertical scratching posts or the sofa.

I'd go for a twist pile, min 50g weight and keep some spare to replace stair treads in future.

Yes we have scratching posts. They still prefer the carpet (one cat especially!) And appreciate risk with all carpets, but wondered if any are less risky than others.

DH thinks we should just get the carpets we want and accept the inevitable!

Ooh that’s a good idea about keeping spare.
I’ll have a look into twist pile - Thankyou.

We've got sisal in our hall and a small loop in one bedroom. Neither of those get scratched. Weirdly they do scratch the short pile plain carpet we have in other rooms. We've got 4 cats. Our prefer to scratch sofa and chair arms 🙄

sheeplikessleep · 06/03/2024 19:46

Thats what I want to hear 🤣, sisal not being scratched.

I am in exactly this dilemma. The one I am looking at is Primo Textures by Cormar. It looks like wool with a loop pile but is 100% polypropylene so easier to clean stains. I have scratch mats down for my cats and encourage them to use them and not the carpet! They’ve never like a post.

cavalier · 10/07/2024 09:09

Sisal is expensive and our carpet place put us off the stuff .. saying it has cat scratch post texture anyway
does it actually work ?
thank you

You could try these...

...good luck trying to fit them! 👿

Loop will be worse than twist, for obvious reasons, but any carpet is a no no if you've got cats that scratch carpet. I couldn't lay new carpet knowing it was about to get decimated, I'd just go hard floor and rugs.
