My poor Lennie

I'm not sure what I am hoping for from posting this but I need to get it out, I am so sad and I think fellow cat slaves will understand.
On Sunday my lovely boy started being sick, and by Monday morning was clearly unwell. A trip to the vets unearthed anaemia and potential liver function issues so he stayed in overnight last night. He took a turn this morning and became unresponsive for a short while. Cue a transfer to the veterinary specialists, they have found internal bleeding in his abdomen, a mass on his liver and clotting problems. He's had a blood transfusion to help his red blood cell count which was initially very low. The ultrasound showed the liver problems but they can't aspirate the mass on his liver for testing until the hemorrhage is controlled.
I'm just broken. He went from seemingly well on Sunday morning to this. I feel like I should have noticed something was wrong beforehand.
I'm so scared we're going to lose him. He's my little shadow - always stomping all over my desk while I'm trying to work, seeking out a warm lap to snuggle and sleeping on my pillow like a hat at night.
Has anyone else experienced this sort of issue in their cat and had a happy outcome?

We're really enjoying having him home. He's taking his medication like a champ which is a relief!
Our other cat was very frosty with him to begin with but seems to have settled down now. He's eating so well which is really nice to see.

A little update..
The vets were incredible and managed to get Len back on track after the haemorrhage and subsequent anaemia. After his transfusion and taking 3 different medications, he had further bloods and his levels were much better, back in normal range.
Sadly the mass on his side has continued to grow. The vets took a blood sample to rule out tb before looking at removal, and they were so sure it was just simply to rule it out as the risk was so low (he spends the majority of his time indoors and has never hunted or eaten a raw food diet). To everyone's shock this blood test has come back positive but they are unsure of what strain it is. He's having the mass removed next Wednesday so that'll be tested to determine. Essentially, if it's the strain contracted from voles and other rodents the outlook is fairly positive but if its bovine or avian tb less so. This is completely unrelated to the haemorrhage and they discovered the mass just by chance.
Very stressful and worrying times yet again. He seems well within himself with no other symptoms so its just such a shock. 🙁

Hi @NotHooray - I know this is an d
Thread but I wondered how your Lennie is getting on? Our cat went to the yesterday with anaemia - she showed no signs of it until a few days ago when she was acting lethargic. She's been at the vets overnight now and I'm very worried about her.

Hiya, firstly I really hope your little kitty is doing better and the vets are keeping you in the loop.
I really wish I had a happy ending to tell you but sadly Lennie passed away on 11th May, a month after the whole debacle began.
Is your cat at your local surgery or at a specialists? If the anaemia is still ongoing and there is no glaringly obvious cause I would push for a canine blood transfusion and vitamin k treatment for clotting issues for sure. Is there any chance of rodenticide poisoning?
For Lennie it seemed to be due to a mass he had in his abdomen. They initially thought it may be TB but it transpired that the mass had its own blood supply and was growing quite steadily so most likely cancer.
I'm really sorry, I don't want to worry you unduly but I absolutely understand how scary anaemia can be. We managed to get Lennies under control initially through a transfusion, vitamin k and another drug which I can't remember now. Ultimately the mass perforated though but if your kitty doesn't have any masses it is unlikely to come to that.
Please let me know how you're getting on, I'm thinking of you and your cat and keeping my fingers crossed for a good recovery x

I am so sorry to hear of Lennie's passing xx

Hi @NotHooray thank you so much for taking the time to reply and I am so sorry about your Lennie.

Sadly we had a call from the vet this morning. Still running a very high temp and her PCV levels were still very low at 10% and he diagnosed non regenerative anemia. He didn't think her blood cells were regenerating at all and thought there was something wrong with her bone marrow.

Blood test showed atypical white blood cells which he said was also a bad sign and indicative of something more sinister going on causing the anaemia. There was an option of blood transfusion and bone marrow biopsy but it was at a specialist center 1.5 hours away. She was so poorly and very weak any way that I knew the next stage would just be too much for her. It would also just prolong what was inevitably going to be them finding something horrible. We spoke it through with the vet and decided PTS was the best option for her. He said she was an unusual case - especially to find all this is a youngish cat but clearly a very ill one indeed and he totally understood and respected our decision not to proceed with further tests and treatments. I honestly think it would have been prolonging the inevitable.

It's so awful though and I keep thinking 'what if' but he'd said whatever the biopsy would have said - it would have been incredibly serious - kidney disease, cancer etc. I am hoping in a way that that is the case.

She wasn't in any pain when she was PTS just had zero energy. I wish we'd had her at home for her last night but you just don't know what to do for the best.

Sending love your way xxxx

Very sorry to hear your update @NotHooray I followed this thread earlier in the year and was keeping my fingers crossed for Lennie.
Really sorry about your news too @pottersbar.
Awful losing a cat, particularly when they are quite young.
My commiserations and best wishes to both of you.

Pudmyboy · 07/07/2024 22:53

So sorry for both of you, @NotHooray and@pottersbar , both of you did the very best you could, so sad, such a small being leaves such a huge hole in our lives💐
