Cat behaviour after dog attack

On Monday my three cats were out in the garden. Due to some work being done to our house a fence panel was down, and unfortunately a neighbours dog (massive Alsatian) got into the garden and went for the cats. Princess shot back inside, Gentleman escaped the dog but was absolutely terrified, Young Lad ended up in the dogs mouth 😭 got him checked out at the vets and aside from some bruising he is ok, just needed painkillers for a couple of days.

Young Lad now refuses to go outside, which I understand. Hoping to coax him out as the weather improves, but just leaving him to it for now.

Our Gentleman though, who has always been incredibly skittish, seems a bit traumatised by the whole thing. We planned to keep him inside for a couple of days, but the day after the incident he escaped. Stayed out for 16 hours, which is very unusual for him. Came home, but wouldn’t go through the back garden and cat flap (attack happened in the back garden). He was loitering around the front door, wanting to be near us, but not wanting to come in. It was like he was scared the dog was in the house. Eventually tempted him in, and once inside he was fine. But the same thing has happened each day since. I let him out in the morning, he stays out all day (in the pissing rain and cold), then turns up on the doorstep acting scared of what’s inside. Takes absolutely ages to tempt him in. He’s clearly shattered when he gets in, curls up somewhere and sleeps till morning.

Not sure how to proceed. Prior to the dog incident he would go out for an hour or so in the morning, then come back and snooze the day away on DDs bed. I’m worried he’s never going to use the cat flap again, and I don’t want him to be scared of his own home. Do I keep him in for a few days? Picture of him in snoozy mode!

This got me thinking and I found an article about a cat who'd been chased in his house by a strange dog. Advice on that article is;'Hopefully he'll just start venturing out (of his hiding places) on his own. If not, toys can be used to entice him. Leaving treats just a bit out of his comfort zone. You want to encourage not push'.
'Be very, very patient about this. Cats are so very ruled by their routines and rituals that they are fairly easily thrown for a total loop. It might take a matter of a few weeks for him to totally trust the environment again. Could happen sooner, but plan on the long run'.

My gut feel would be yes, to keep him in for a few days so he can see no dogs there/so he can settle/trust the house. At the very least he'll be less knackered from not avoiding the house! And then I suppose you could stick a treat just out in the back garden to entice him out there?

But I'm just guessing.

I don't really have any advice other than keep doing what you are.
They are all beautiful 😍

I would keep them all inside for a few days or a week and then give them outdoor access again.

It takes a while for cortisol levels to come down after a scary experience so he may still be acting on adrenaline rather than logic.

Mine had a similar scare and was so traumatised the vet suggested Gabapentin (which worked).

Poor cats x hope he settles back down again soon x

Like a PP I'd keep them all in for a few days to give them a chance to overcome the trauma.

Why didn't the neighbour have her dog under control?!!

Twokittycats · 04/03/2024 01:30

Aww gorgeous kitties!! 😍 thank goodness they are okay! I worry about my cats encountering dogs as well, especially as there seem to be more dogs around than ever before.

I would keep him in a few days, lots of treats and fuss so he feels safe again. Maybe you could go in the garden and leave the door open so he can join you outside and give some treats outside. Bless him, they all must’ve been terrified 😕 I hope he gets back to normal soon

OP’s fence panel was down. Did you tell them this was the case @nomorespaghetti? So they could keep their ddog secure?

nomorespaghetti · 04/03/2024 07:23

Thank you all. Some really good advice. I feel like he’s slowly coming back to himself, but it’s going to take a while.

The neighbour did know the fence panel was down, but unfortunately they didn’t pass the information on to the dog walker who was bringing the dog back from a walk at the time. Neighbour and dog walker were mortified and really apologetic.

My very gentle / nervous cat was viciously attacked by a neighbour's cat last year. He was so traumatised that he hid in the loft room for two days, then afterwards only ventured out briefly to poop, and he'd sit staring at the cat flap for 5m to pluck up the courage to do so (he ignored the litter tray I'd put out). Took over a month to get back to normal. I also got a Feliway diffuser (not that I fully trust the product claims).

In your situation, I'd keep them indoors for a week at least (assuming they'll use litter trays), they all need to chill and feel safe for a good long while and Gentleman especially needs to learn that indoors is safe.
