Anyone got experience with fleas?

Two cats, second one arrived last spring with fleas. Both cats long-ish hair. Treated them both, then stopped checking for a bit and they had a resurgence late summer. At that point started treating them both monthly with Broadline, cleaned and treated the house (and lawn), combed regularly etc.

A few months on and I've just combed one of them and discovered two live mature fleas and a few bits of excrement. Over the winter this has happened a couple of times, mainly with this one cat that brought the fleas in the first place. But it's definitely not an infestation like it was last spring, or late summer.

How does it work with fleas? has it been quieter over the winter because they thrive on heat? or is it the case that there's still eggs maturing in the house that then jump onto the cats, but because the Broadline is working, they are just passengers there for a short time, rather than being able to set up house on them and cause an infestation?

Would love some advice from someone who has lived long-term with fleas, or whose cats seem to attract them? (Our first cat remains generally flea free most of the time)

You should be treating them monthly, end of. For ours they always seem to come back otherwise.

Yes, have been treating them monthly, tried various different ones in spring, then since August they've both been on Broadline monthly, no gaps

I have got rid of them a few times, we managed to get flea free but then my cat picked some up from the next doors cat. I had to take her to the vet and get some different flea treatment which seems to be working so far fingers crossed.

I do think certain cats are susceptible. Like humans and mozzies. Arthur has never had fleas, never seen one. I used Advantage for a while but now just use Frontline, and am very bad at remembering to use it. My cue was a tick that he deposited on my bed the other day! He does seem to attract those 🤢 So I gave him a dose. It's been a warm wet Winter, so I think this year could be generally bad for all things insect, well they'll be happy, but we won't!

As well.as treating the cats treat your house. Indorex and hoover lots.

I know this is the Litter Tray, but when our dog had flees we tried all the usual "spot on" treatments, even ones we bought via the vet. But then she had itching issues and the vet injected her with something for fleas, and bam - no more fleas. After months of hassle.

So my next port of call would be the vet.

You can't just treat the cats, you need to treat the entire house too - hot wash things like bedding and beds, indorex soft furniture, clean the carpets etc.

Thanks all - I think that's why I'm feeling a bit scunnered. We've done all the things suggested- hoovering/washing/hoovering/washing and have been through many cans of Indorex. We've even treated the lawn!
Arggh, will we ever be free of them?!

I would be looking at changing treatment then - fleas do become immune so if that brand isn't working I'd be taking them both to the vet to get something else.

My daughter treats her cat regularly with Advantage, but recently he cat had lots of scabs all over him. The vet said it was an allergy to flea dirt. My daughter explained she treats him regularly but the vet said fleas are becoming immune to over the counter flea treatments. The vet prescribed a stronger flea treatment (vet only) and steroids to deal with the allergy. He is now much better.
We also have a cat which we regularly treat with Advantage and she has been fine, however the cattery we use also mentioned to us about fleas becoming resistant to Advantage and other over the counter treatments. Sounds expensive to me 🙁
