New cat hiding

We bought home a young cat yesterday probably around 3-4 months of age.

We got her home and set her up in the play room off the living room and shut the door so she could hear and smell us but feel safe to do her thing.

Today we have the door open with a baby gate up to move things along. We just want to keep enthusiastic children and small dog out of her space but let her explore on her own timetable.

She used the litter tray and ate in the night but has been hiding on a shelf in the cupboard since she got here.

I've spent an hour here and there sat in the room quietly working away and not bothering her.

How long do you think she'll hide for? She was on at the woman who found her house. But her kids were older and she had more cats.

Any advice?

He got his revenge last night by yelling at me every hour on the hour. Brat.

😂😻

Our little girl cat lost her big brother last summer and has become very vocal since then - she was always bossy, but now she's off the scale tyrannical...

Day 4 and she's still in hiding. But she is purring now and she took a freeze dried treat out of my hand! 🤩

Ah, the power of treats... 😁

The stray adapted took only a day to come out, but he is and adult and very friendly, total lap cat. Mine hid behind the kitchen cupboards and he is big. Sure your lovely girl will be fine. My best ever perfect girl was a tortie

What's her backstory? I guess it depends on what she's been through.

I adopted my older tortie/white aged 5 and she had been a stray. Two years later she is still a wuss! Terrified particularly of the window cleaners! She was a bit scared at first but she didn't ever hide, just wanted to scale the kitchen cupboards. Younger tortie/white girl strolled in like she owned the place. She was a neglect case sadly, but confident girl all the same! We were told new boy would be shy initially but he made himself comfortable from the first night he arrived, and there were 9 of us in the house.

They are just all different!

She still likes to live in her cupboard alongside the Duplo box, and has also been using a tucked in quilt on the play room day bed like a hammock! 😂

Fluffy bed lies unused! 🙄

But if you shake the treat box she will come running out for strokes and she is madly affectionate! We even had a little play yesterday!

Baby gate is still in place and she's now brave enough to wander around her room while the dog watches.
The dog still likes to watch the cat excitedly but is calming a bit and has associated her cat watching with a positive treat.
