Getting cat to put on weight

Hello all,

18yr old cat with hyperthyroidism and early kidney disease.

Her weight is dropping slightly and the vet has emailed me a note saying to try and get more food down her.

I'm at home 24/7 so can basically feed her on demand/have food always available and replaced with fresh.

Here is what she eats in a day, suggestions welcome.

Large tray of Katkin wet food (200 cals)
1 lik-e-lix tube
Half a pouch of blink/half a small tin of untamed (both wet food)
a few drops of olive oil
Maybe 1-2 dreamies - she's not as bothered about these as she was.

QUESTIONS:

She LOVES the lik-e-lix I assume it's junk food but if it gets calories down her could I give her 2 tubes a day?

What about kitten milk or something?

Thanks

I split the Kat kin into 4 portions btw. She eats little and often. If I put it all out at once it goes dry.

If you google high calorie food for cats, it comes up with a list of brands;

  • Here are some high-calorie cat food options available in the UK:
  • Royal Canin Veterinary Diet Recovery RS canned cat food
  • Hill’s Prescription Diet a/d Urgent Care canned cat food
  • Wellness CORE Natural Grain Free Chicken Turkey & Chicken Liver Paté Canned Cat Food
  • Merrick Backcountry Raw Infused Game Bird Recipe Dry Food
  • Purina Pro Plan Kitten
  • IAMS ProActive Health High Protein Food
  • Tiki Cat Luau Wet Food
or (these are american links);

I've never heard of any of them!

Had the opposite problem with my fat piggy. She did love a bit of cheddar ... Would that be okay for an occasional treat if it doesn't upset her stomach?

You could possibly get away with 2 sachets of likeliks a day; website says if 4kg, 1-2 satchets. It's 87% moisture, apparently!

@Datafan55 thanks so much for that!

Yes mine was a fat piggy until the last year when she developed the thyroid/kidney issues.

Yes, she does like cheese. She also used to like peanut butter so maybe I could try her with those!

It's so weird, for years I had to restrict her food, now I'm fattening her up!

Yes it does seem counter initiative :-D 'Here's some more forbidden cheese, babs'. Cat - 'brillant!'

Most of the stuff you are giving her is wet. I assume she is thirsty with the kidney disease? - maybe that's why she doesn't fancy the dreamies so much.

Yes, she's always been a good eater. She still seems to enjoy food (esp the lik-e-lix) but just has a smaller appetite than she once did.

Yes, she has gone off dry food, maybe she's clever enough to know that's not good for her now that her kidneys are playing up.

She drinks water too but not excessively.
