Cat 'arguments'

Hello. Our adorable little fluff ball is now venturing out into the garden. She has really taken to it. However, our neighborhood does have a lot of cats in it. All three houses down from us all have at least one cat (most two). And there are lots of others bopping about.

On her first day she had two spats with other cats. One was on a neighbour's garage roof (not the other cat's garden though) and there was a lot of arched backs and growling. She seemed to be being submissive though as I could see a lot of slow blinks from her. She came back home when I called her but it took her a while as she was scared. The second cat came into our garden and again there was a lot of looking at each other and some growling. She eventually chased him away.

My question is, should we get involved in these spats and try and separate them/chase the other cat away when they come into our garden or should we leave them to sort out the pecking order themselves?

When next door adopted a big old Tom cat I remember a few cat fights but then is settled down. She hasn't met him yet so I'm a bit worried about their reactions to each other.

Depends. I've got one cat who fights deadly but silently. I leave her to it. The other one makes an absolute racket and always comes home bleeding. For him I have a large supersoaker and would go out and try to get to him at the screeching stage because I think he's basically just asking for help.

We recently started to get visits from a former house cat, if I see him I put him back out of the garden because he's totally clueless about things like fences let alone if he were to meet another cat.

Oooh! A supersoaker might be a good idea! Just had to chase the second cat away as he tried to get into the open back door (cat flap is being fitted next week).

I would let her get on with it unless you feel she's being badly injured or cornered and she can't escape.

Well I just watched her go after a massive black cat. She was in next door's garden. A black cat popped his head up and she leaped over the fence at him. Didn't hear any noises so maybe they were just playing. She sauntered back home, cool as a furry cucumber.

If there was no howling it sounds like play.

My cat asbo had a black cat friend he went about with.
