Vomiting cat

We went away last weekend and the terrible twosome had a cat sitter who we have used before. all well, videos of the cats on her visits. no worries. came home to huge vomits around the house. cat sitter couldn't think of anything untoward. didn't know which cat had vomited and both looked well, eating, drinking, slightly looser bowels but that was it.
found a vomit every day last week but still no idea which cat. friday morning saw which cat it was so took Eric to the vets. she agreed he looked well and conservative management was prudent. he had an anti emetic injection and started him on laxapet for fur balls.
this morning found watery foam vomits all round the downstairs. (google tells me these are empty stomach vomits). Ernie (the other partner in crime) is not himself. not interested in his food, not as lively but happy enough sitting in the garden watching the world go by in the sunshine. he had an increased breathing rate initially but that has settled. we are tag teaming him
so he isn't on his own at all and he is responding nicely to chin rubs. he doesn't look unwell, he's alert, just not as active and not interested in his food.
Eric is back to his usual daft self thinking he can catch passing aeroplanes!
rang vets for telephone advice and was put through to what i now know to be a call centre who immediately said take him to X vets and it will be £288 consultation fee! i don't happen to have that down the back of the sofa two days before payday.
i pay into a scheme with my vets for unlimited consultations but it wasn't clear until now that didn't include out of hours.
i was then told i could have a video consult for £24 which i'm waiting for a call on. however, i suspect they will say bring him down as well if there is £288 in it for them.
any top tips from wise litter tray folk to get us through to the morning when usual vet open?
i've brought his water bowl to where he is and will boil some plain chicken to tempt him to eat. i will
try him with the laxapet later as well.
thanks in advance!

My cat goes through phases of not eating so much but without looking or acting poorly, and he vomits occasionally too. I think it can be down to how active he is. If it is cold and rainy for a few days he spends most of his time asleep indoors, and eats less whereas in the summer he is out and about more and so eats more.
I think that cats must also get mild colds or just be a bit under the weather, the same as we do.

He also reacts to stress by throwing up, so maybe you being away was unsettling.

kittielittie · 25/02/2024 11:20

vet did suggest stress of us being away as a possibility but it's not the first time we have left them. eric was vomity for a week but well and ernie vomity today and not himself. maybe a bug?
i feel less panicky now and think we can look after him today. just let him do what he wants when he wants and keep him company.
i'm not happy that the out of hours arrangement is a call centre who's default is take him for a very expensive consultation regardless of the issue.
i'll be having a think about what to do for the future. i'll feedback to our normally lovely and sensible vet as they may not know this is what happens.

My cat has recently had diarrhea and was sick a couple of times. One of the vets we saw said she feels like she's been seeing a lot of animals recently for sickness and diarrhea so thinks there's something going round.

that's useful to know @Laurama91. he's sleeping now with his favourite toy and looks settled. hasn't drank anything that i've seen yet so may syringe a bit of water in later when he wakes up to keep him hydrated. i'm approaching it with my paediatric nurse head on!
Eric is looking a bit confused as to why his usually crackers brother isn't up for a play.

My boy wasn't himself for a few days but then was running around and still having a bit of diarrhea. I did end up taking him 3 times to the vet because it just wasn't like him to not play. 1st visit he gave steroid to settle stomach. Next visit, same vet gave steroids, antibiotics(just incase) and anti sickness. He was fine for a week on chicken. When we tried to swap back to food it started again, not fully but poo was a little soft. 3rd time and this was the vet who said maybe a bug and he seems fine in himself.

He was drinking though. Have you tried lick e lix? We was giving some of this for hydration too

kittielittie · 25/02/2024 13:06

he's up and eating! more worry than bloomin kids!

If they're both on the same food it could be that it was a dodgy batch, maybe?

In September last year, both of my adults went off their food at the same time which is completely unheard of for them. They normally eat everything and lick the bowls clean at every meal. I tried another flavour of the same food but same again - they were both clearly hungry so I went out and got another brand and they both wolfed it down.

There was something in the news a while ago about Felix cat food making cats really quite poorly - not sure if that's what you feed but thought it was worth a mention.

Lumiodes · 25/02/2024 14:27

Years ago my cat was vomiting. Turns out he had carbon monoxide poisoning. He was sitting on the neighbour’s boiler flue because it was nice and warm, and breathing in the fumes. I always mention it when someone says their cat is sick because apparently it’s quite common.

kittielittie · 25/02/2024 17:16

thanks for the responses.
they have felix 1/2 a pouch morning and evening and iams biscuits for sterilised cats. eric was never off his food but ernie has been today. he's had some plain boiled chicken and is 100% better compared to this morning. i've tried every other pouch and wet food known to cat and they turn their noses up so i give the bare minimum felix pouch i can get away with.
i have a carbon monoxide tester and have checked its working so all good there but a good tip.
so happy he's on the mend and i wasn't manipulated into spending £288. i still haven't had the video call back so i've rang to cancel it and been told 10-14 working days for the £24 back!!!
will be dropping usual vet an email later. depending on their response i'll decide if i'll move the kitty Kray's to another practice.

Yeah my carbon monoxide tester was working in the house. Cat was going outside and sitting on the warm roof vent breathing the fumes!

Just a thought if you need vet again on a Sunday. Do you have insurance? My cat managed to break his claw right down to the quick. I dont have money for emergency vet, as he's cost me fortune recently. I remembered I'd seen something on my insurance about 24/7 vet video call. I did this today and it didn't cost extra. I just rang for advice really to see if he needed to go tomorrow

kittielittie · 25/02/2024 22:01

@Laurama91 yes i do have insurance so that is a good call try you don't know how good they are until you need to claim but

I'm with petplan. I think it was a vet nurse I spoke to. Just a few questions and then she switched to video to see his claw and gave me advice. Also offered to email advice if needed
to be honest was easier than my vets when I wanted advice because reception always tell me to go in and a vet asked me why I'd brought him after 1 day of diarrhea.
